Does it matter which one is used 209 or 209A? Have a cousin in need for his muzzleloader. TIA

Aren't 209A's "hotter" and recommended when using Blackhorn 209?

Aside from that, I've used both interchangeably with no issues.

I do believe blackthorn recommends a magnum primer. The only primer issue I had was in an encore. Can’t remember now which brand but there was a 209 primer that was a little thicker/taller and would not allow me to close the breech tight enough to pull the hammer back.

Rio is the cleanest burning 209 primer. No build up in the breechplug canal after firing .

I’ve never shot Pyrodex with 209s, but since it works with caps, I suspect any 209, except maybe the special 777 ones, will be fine. Those might even work, but are a bit weaker to reduce buildup with 777 and its kin.

Never had an issue with blowback or sticking primers in a break-action, but I suppose it might happen. With the primer supply being what it is, I doubt you can pick and choose. Keep that flash channel clean regardless.

I use std Winchester 209 primers. in my TC Impact I used to reload my shotguns. Never had a problem. I have read of some problems with different in lines/break opens that had a little more clearance you had to try different primers to stop the blow back. Then also I have read about primers being too tall as ilikeguns posted above

Not only too tall, but too fat as well. Some simply won’t even go in the breechplug. Lot of variation in 209s.

Thanks to all. Was able to get my cousin a sleeve of CCI Muzzleloader 209 today along with 3 boxes 127 LRX with my birthday discount and no freight for a change from Midway.

I'd been looking pretty steadily for two months for 209 (not the 209A's) primers and finally got lucky at Midway this week also. Bring on hunting season!
