It really pisses me off when people and even worse local governmental units violate Flag etiquette...
A cold front came thru last night and blew onof of the local towns "decorative" flags off its mount. I happened to see it lying on the shoulder of the road. The had it mounted on a non-lighted telephone pole and left it up 24-7... That just irks me. The same town has a park nearby with two pole one obviously looked after by veterans (the flag is always in the proper position) and another that always lags a day or two..

This one came home and had its rents repaired before being mounted with proper night lighting as is duly respectful...since I cannot currently adhere to proper raising and lowering hours..

End rant...

I'm the same way sometimes, but I am torn. At least somebody wants to fly the flag, but I hate it when they don't know how. I don't like writing on them or decorative flags that aren't right. If it is just a bunting, then OK, but don't screw up a flag for decorations.

I fly a flag in my front yard. It is pretty tattered and torn. It is in pretty bad shape. I continue to fly it because it represents the state of our nation under this administrtion.

I AM THE FLAG
I am the flag of the United States of America.

My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom. I am confident.
I am arrogant. I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
My head is a little higher,
My colors a little truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped - I am saluted.
I am loved - I am revered.
I am respected - I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war for more than 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appamatox.
I was there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France, in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me.
I was there. I led my troops.
I was dirty, battleworn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me and I was proud.

I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries
I have helped set free. It does not hurt for I am invincible.
I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled in the streets of my country.
And when it's done by those whom I've served in battle - it hurts.
But I shall overcome - for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of earth and
stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon.
I have born silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.
When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded comrades on the battle field,
when I am flown at halfmast to honor my soldier,
or when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,

I am proud.
I am the flag of the United States of America.

Been seeing some here too lately where there never was before. It ain’t the longtime Tejanos doing this, most of them have never even been to Mexico, it’s the newer arrivals, lots of them illegal.

The proper way to dispose of a worn out flag is to respectfully burn it. Our church's Trail Life troopmaster is a member of the VFW and one of his duties is to collect worn out flags to be properly disposed of. We regularly have flag burnings at our campouts but we can't even come close to keeping up with them. He has a pickup load of them.
One problem is that most flags now are polyester. They don't burn like cotton, leaving ash. It burns hot and melts. The fumes are quite toxic so you sure don't want to be downwind of a flag fire. I have a burn pit in one of my pastures. One of these days he's going to bring over a bunch of them and we're going to have a big time burning.

Melting and toxic fumes versus the old cotton ones that burn. There is a parallel there somewhere... Flags need to be flown upside down these days to have any modicum of truth.

Fortunately it was not worn out, just one of two bar seam threads got pulled when it tumbled along the shoulder of the road. Took about 45 minutes to re-stitch the trailing thread...
I would rather see bunting than an improperly handled flag.. To me it shows a lack of respect, or at minimum laziness in not taking the time to read proper display rules...
I thought they were taught in school when I was a kid...
