Or sharp shinned.

I'm no ornithologist but that's what it looks like to me. Had one in the back yard last week pluckin' a blue jay

That's why I asked for expert help.. We had some Coopers hawks nesting in the neighborhood for some years now (as verified by raptor rescue folks when a young one managed to crack a bone and needed time to heal up). But I haven't seen them lately.

Probably Cooper by the odds, but in reality.. I dunno. Could be sharp shin.

Tik,

I got one of them big feathered predators at my place. He loves a certain fence post to perch on and watch the field. I also have a damn big Horned Owl that finds my place appealing.

Cool birds....Unless either one makes a run at my dog.

I keep deer road kills out on the lake in front of camp here to entice predators. Eagles come often, one time I had a count of 12 balds on the carcass together eating and fighting when all of a sudden a golden showed up. You would have thought it was the second coming the way those bald eagles got out of the way.
Every single bald moved off and stood there watching as the golden had the entire carcass to himself.

I occasionally see Harriers coursing over the old farm meadows around here in the summer.

I agree with what has been posted here; Cooper’s.

Photographs can be deceptive but the tail does look long and rounded, also the breast streaking leans toward brownish rather than russet, and fades toward the belly.

As per....

The darker the red of the iris the older the bird. I’m not all that well qualified to judge but I’m gonna WAG a 2 Yo young adult.

Cooper’s live such a reckless lifestyle that they don’t usual live a lot longer than a songbird. Broken bones are frequent.
