My vehicle is over 20 yrs old and my rifles have Leupold scopes.

One notch above dumpster diving I know.

But trying to live within my means.

Tell me that again after lightning fries your water pump or your fridge/freezer conks out.

That’s home maintenance; not an emergency. Happens all the time. Be prepared for it.
Yeah, be prepared for lightning strikes and any other natural disasters that might arise. Such things are not emergencies. LOL

It is a sad thing when it comes to savings and being able to pay your way. Just think of how bad off many would be if they had to endure the Great Depression the way many of our kin did.

I’m just telling you what I do. I drive what I can pay for. I live in what I can pay for. When it breaks, I fix or replace it. It isn’t a big deal if you aren’t making payments.

Kid has medical stuff. One specialist not in network. Pay up front. Had to put 21k on my credit card in 1.5 months.

Kinda stressful, but why i have a credit card.

Insurance paid most of it back after a few months.

CC is for emergencies.

She was stunned.

Told her savings or sig loan or credit card, whatever.

She asked why my loans and credit cards were not maxd out, seriously said thats what they are for.....extra money, your extra money.

Really?

The goal is not to live within your means. The goal is to live below your means. That way, if you lose your job and have to take a pay cut, it's no big deal. The rich stay rich by acting like they're poor and the poor stay poor by acting like they're rich. Like others have said, look at all the people with expensive cars, big houses and the latest electronic gadgets, but have no money in the bank. Every time I got a raise, I'd keep the same take-home and just put the raise into investments.

I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of people would consider those things emergencies.
