I mostly remember the really bad, and really good meals.

I wish I could recall more.

Remember seeing the big cardboard box the mess hall sliders came in. The side was labeled "grade D meat, for prison and military use only".

Yeah, only time I had KP was in basic, washing dishes and pots. Lots and lots of dishes and pots! grin
The only duty I ever really disliked was setting up the Battalion Cmdrs tent when we were out in the field. RHIP. (Rank has its privileges)
We were sleeping in pup tents, but he had a GP Medium with carpet, for Christ sakes!
CQ wasn’t bad, I’d let the runner take a nap, and then I’d do the same while they minded the phone.
I still remember the MREs we used to fight over. Meatballs w/ BBQ sauce were like gold because they had the chocolate nut cake!
Lord how I loved those guys. We bitched and fought amongst ourselves, but there ain’t one that I wouldn’t have died for.
I still keep in touch with a few.

Love to hear these stories. Never had KP, and was always amazed how much I enjoyed the occasional field mess hall food when we were deployed. Hell of a nice break from the CRats and then MRE’s.

And like OGB said, the mess hall breakfasts never left you hungry. You might schitt like a crippled coon later, but you weren’t hungry!

In Basic, we had good cooks, and I made money doing KP for others.
I broke LOTS of eggs, was good at it. The cooks turned me loose as soon as possible, and I always ate better than most in the mess hall.
I never complained, so they took a liking to me.

KP in Basic, 1960, peeling potatoes. Never after. I don't remember any bad food at any time. Not restaurant quality, but pretty good.

i do remember one thing from kp in basic. the clipper was the little window where you slid your tray in and somebody on kp would take it. except nobody "slid" them. they were literally thrown. it was the only time in basic when a trainee got to schit on somebody, the poor kp clipper dude.

If this is true it’s kinda funny, also very sad. I laughed at first, but then thought about all the pieces of sheet sitting around getting EBT cards “food stamps “ and sheeting out kids. Probably eating better than those who serve our country. The thought that those zzz holes are sitting around doing nothing while are soldiers are eating prison food isn’t right. Sad state of affairs.

Farming, it is (or was) true. Actually liked them. Better than goat knuckle soup, a "dirt squirrel" staple.

No KP, but still remember getting served green scrambled eggs out of a mermite can for a "hot" meal during training.
