Lived in an auto manufacturing area. Kids in HS got new cars at 16. Dual income UAW jobs. Expected the factories to hire them.
Main one gone, satellite support gone. Retirees went to FL, recession had many younger just walk away, leave homes to the banks.
Minor uptick w another company. Hear HS grads.....buying new 4x4 and having kids, buying houses.....i dunno how they do it at 20 bucks an hr.
Ol lady must have Only Fans or sumpthin.
Yup. A friend bought his 16 yo daughter a new car when she got her license. The 1st week she hit 2 other cars in the school parking lot.

A sociologist could dig into the facts of folks stuck in this situation, and I suspect, come up with some conclusions that would surprise none of us. As far as who these folks are, how they think, how they vote, their spending priorities, to some degree their age, what they like for entertainment....on and on. I have a renter, a damn good finish carpenter, 48 yr old, with earning potential, but he just can't put the puzzle together....he told me over a year ago, I'm going to have to do something about my Ford diesel, it's dying. Sure enough it did last month and he had to borrow money from his Mom to get another pickup to go to work. I couldn't sleep a wink if I was that close to disaster. On the other hand, I know some working moms that have to live like that, schidt job, kids, that don't squander money, that live hand to mouth. They just pray the old car don't go tits up. I got sympathy for the ones that are still trying and don't begrudge their kids the free lunch at school.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Only 44% of Americans can. Just saw that on Charles Payne and thought wow. Over half of Americans would have to charge it on a credit card, borrow from a family member or take out a loan for $1000. How could they possibly know that ? How many here was contacted ?

An older accountant friend of my parents and I were talking about this one day. He told me stories of Dr's, Lawyers, executives etc all filing bankruptcy because they just couldn't live within their means. It doesn't matter how much one makes if they can't live below their means. "pay yourself first" was beat into my head. I thank him for those chats all the time. Life is much more pleasant when you're debt free.

My mother in law raised three children as a single mom working at a shirt factory. Today, she has a fat bank account, a house, nice car, and 120 acres. If she can do it, I can too.

Was close friends with a USAF Flight Surgeon for decades. Guy always had the latest camera and computer gear. Full bird Colonel (0-6) with flight pay and other bonuses. One day he confided to me his monthly balance on just one credit card was roughly $25,000. And no, he never was able to pay it off to avoid interest.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

If a $1000 will fix it, it ain't really an emergency. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tell me that again after lightning fries your water pump or your fridge/freezer conks out. That’s home maintenance; not an emergency. Happens all the time. Be prepared for it. Yeah, be prepared for lightning strikes and any other natural disasters that might arise. Such things are not emergencies. LOL I’m just telling you what I do. I drive what I can pay for. I live in what I can pay for. When it breaks, I fix or replace it. It isn’t a big deal if you aren’t making payments. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS AGAIN. Live within your means. I drive a 15 year old truck, my wife's is 8 years old. I am 77 and still work for a living. I will never retire. You want something?????????????? WORK for it.

Change the question...
Could you cover a $10,000 unexpected expense?
Or
$100,000... i.e. maybe an critical medical expense?
If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

$100k medical emergency would pretty much wipe out our cash.
People get funny talking about money but I don't give a chit. Certainly not bragging either.
Drive an old pickup and really don't have a life outside of our little cow farm routine.
It seems like a guy is either busy making money or bored and spending it.
Easy to save when you're never bored. (and don't have kids, and wife has a good job, etc...)
