Any opinions on 52/53 models with steel vs brass rotors in terms of value, function or cool factor? I have a mint 53 eg 300 and was wondering about putting a brass rotor in it.

Case colored rotor in it now? I’d consider that more desirable than a brass rotor. And I’d consider an all original “mint” rifle worth a lot more than one that’s had parts swapped.

Just my opinion.

Many consider the case colored rotors a positive.

Yes, indeed. Most of the steel ones I've seen have a plain finish. Not a lot them were cased from what I've seen.

I've always wondered what kind of finish those plain steel ones have and why they don't rust. Anyone know how they are treated?

Another wrinkle in the Savage blanket ^^^^^

Growing up you heard about the "brass rotor Savage". The old timey gun traders were always bragging on em. You want one a tha gooduns, git you one with the brass rotor. Back when they made gooduns. Before the innerwebs, all they had was magazines and books, gunshows, and woodstove talk. Took many years to build up to legend status, but the old brass rotor Savage was "the one you want".

Now we know, thanks to instant worldwide communication, the steel rotor Savage was a special niche in history. Don't go back to brass just for the sake of living in the past. It's the age of enlightenment (arguable), so grab that steel rotor Savage and hold it high and proud!

*If you don't like the way it looks, dump it like a hot rock and go git you a brass rotor one. They everwhere.

But one that we've known about for a very long time. There are likely tens of thousands of 99's with steel rotors from 1952/1953. The only reason it's not more commonly known is that most people don't look at the rotor.

Heck, I have 3 in that serial number range in the safe that probably have a steel rotor and I didn't note it down in my notes.

Would it be a finish or treatment.. or just the fact that the magazine is unlikely on a 99 to get moisture in it? Never seen a lot of internal rust in the magazine area of the receiver or other parts. Just a lot of gunked up oil, usually. grin

I have a 50 eg and the rotor is cast steel. We’re they common and why did they go to case hardened steel?

No, 99's from 1952/1953 with steel or case colored rotors are fairly common. Lots and lots of 99's made in those years.

An earlier one with it would be uncommon, but I think we've seen a couple? First, what's the serial number range and what's the stamp on the front of the lever? Should be 1 or 2 numbers followed by a letter in a circular stamp, on the front of the lever boss above the serial number. Like this:

That's 1950. Very uncommon, but we see a few back then. Found a note that an early 1949 (probably) 99EG with serial number 521883 also had a steel rotor. Early trials for them? It was thought they did steel rotors due to lack of brass after the start of the Korean War, but that's a guess.

I was referring to the question of finish on the steel rotors, not the rotors being steel.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've dumped water out of my Savages, so that rotor gets good and wet. If they were bare steel, they would surely rust.

The rotor is "sintered" stainless steel . Folks have to remember stainless has been around since the early 1900's (Krupp Iron Works) .

I would say not very encountered in 99 rotors.

I have an EG made in 1948 with the sintered steel rotor . I have a photo of the sintered rotor out of the rifle and can clearly see the mold lines . This is a process that was researched and perfected in the US during WW2 .

I have two 99's with the color case hardened rotors (which are not stainless) . One is a EG in the 800,000 range .

The brass and cased rotors are my favorite .

The one in my 50 eg is a uniform dull grey that can be polished to a smooth shiny stainless finish, which I did on the number ring. I have a pic of mine, which is out of the rifle but I’m not knowing about putting up pics here.

Just got this 300 99EG from a member here. It has a case hardened rotor. The serial number is 6832xx. My 99R in 250-3000 is 6984xx and has a brass rotor. Does this narrow down the last of the cased rotors and the change back to brass rotors? Two questions come to mind. 1. The 250-3000 were much lower production and maybe there were enough left over brass rotors that it wasn't necessary to use the cased rotor? 2. The more expensive 99R may have continued to have a brass rotor? Does anyone know of a cased or other steel rotor in a 250-3000 or a 99R with a cased or steel rotor?
Some pics of the cased rotor.

The case is more distinct with the rotor turned.

I posted pictures above of a couple 99R's with steel rotors, so they were on both. Not all 99's had the steel or case colored rotors in a certain range, only some. Brass continued to show up at the same time.
