I was going to buy this one today for $599. It’s a 1991 era 44 Mag with the 5.5 barrel. Have it on hold.

The frame where the notch pin comes through appears to have been ground down on one side. It is shinier there and appears intentional. It locks up tight and has good timing. There is no damage on the cylinder and I can’t imagine this is from anything but someone grinding on it for some reason. Is there any ‘gunsmithing reason for this and should that be a deal breaker?

Maybe there was a burr there from the manufacturing, that needed to be cleaned up.

The rear sight looks like it’s down as far as it will go too. What is by the loading gate?

Looks like the bolt port was cleaned up from having a machining bur.

Bolt looks good, cylinder isn't scored from an out of adjustment hand or bolt.

As long as the cylinder locks up tight upon cocking, and the cylinder indexes as it should, it's probably GTG.

I don’t see again that would stop me from buying it - I’d think a casting burr that was ground off.

Looks like the rear sight pivot pin has been drifted out - may have had a scope mount on it, and the rear sight removed.

If the screw heads and the drift pins don’t look marred, it’s probably not an issue.

There doesn't seem to be any drag mark on the cylinder from the bolt. I guess somebody worked (filed or polished) on the bolt to keep from marking the cylinder without removing the bolt from the frame and made those marks on the frame in the process.

Not an issue IMO as well.

That's a good price considering the times. My favorite Super.

As long as there is no cylinder rattle and minimal cylinder play and you check the cylinder/barrel timing, you should be good to go.

I passed on it. Went to look at it again. Timing was good but it has more play than I was comfortable with. If I cocked it and dropped the hammer and held the trigger back the cylinder had just as much play. I brought a bright light and the frame looks like it was welded and ground down on that side looking down the hole for the locking pin. I’m not sure why that would have been necessary. They thought maybe it seized at some point due to powder fouling. But the cylinder is in nice shape, maybe that got replaced at some point.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions.

It looks like there was a rough spot, and that was the old owners attempt to smooth it out. It’s an area that should not hurt anything. A little file work, and sandpaper you can make the whole inside of the window flawless. Good price fir stainless

You did good. It doesn't look right. Can't say exactly why, something happened to it and it shows.
