I found a savage 338 federal and am looking for some brass. I haven’t had any luck but was wondering who all had just used 308 brass backed up. I figured I could find Lapua 308 brass easier and probably cheaper than 338 federal brass. It should be just as good shouldn’t.

I think a lot of hunters use 308 brass because it's easier to find than most. I have used 308 brass and its easy to make into 338 Fed.

I would start with Winchester brand brass.........it has more capacity than Federal and probably RP, it does in 7/08. Very consistent IME.

Nothing wrong with Lapua, but not sure you will see any difference. Just my thoughts. FWIW, if me, I would use 185 Barnes, 210 Noslers, and 200 Hornady SP. Good round that is very capable.

Good luck.

When is the last time you've bought Winchester brass?

Yeah I haven’t been able to find any Winchester brass. Didn’t know if the Lapua would be any better or if I should just use any 308 brass I can find

I have only fired one box of properly head stamped brass through my 338F. All of my brass other than that has been necked up 308 brass. I’m using Lapua now and it is excellent. All I’m doing to form the brass is running new 308 brass through a 338F sizing die . Very simple and effective.

My question was directed toward 65BR's comment about good consistency, not Winchester availability. Sorry I wasn't clear about that.

I only use RP 308 brass and just run them through a 338F resizer die. Lapua has been easy to find around me lately but truly, any 308 brass will work. IIRC, the necked up 308 brass will have a slightly shorter neck than standard but it is not an issue.

I used Federal brand .308 Win. brass for my 338 Federal. It worked fine for me.

Federal primer pockets get loose pretty quickly from my limited reloading experience. 3 loadings and you could almost push them in with your finger.
