Read in American Hunter that SAAMI has approved the 338 RPM.

Given Weatherby’s history with the .338-‘06, they should be well positioned to market this chambering.

Thoughts ?

What use do they intend it for? Having a hard time seeing it from here. I owned a Wby UL in 338-06 years ago. Great rifle but the niche it filled didn't exist.

There are those who feel that the next power level above a .30-‘06 / 180 or / 200 is not encountered until the .375 H&H.

For me that increment comes at 338 Win Mag power level.

The Wby RPM is going to offer slightly less velocity than the Win Mag, especially in the higher weights;
but as a plus 4 or 5 down.

Tough to carve a niche when you’re competing with the .30-‘06.

For some reason, I am very interested in this cartridge, even though I have no real use for it.

But I am not interested in $90 dollar a box ammo or a $3000 dollar gun that has a synthetic stock.
Maybe they will chamber the vanguard in it.

The RCM already fills that niche in a short action.

But I like Weatherbys go for it attitude.

Synthetic stock ? 90 dollars a box ammo you say?

Wrong on both counts .

They already have the 340. Besides, why bother, try and find ANY Weatherby ammo OR components...

A new launch (well, sort of...)

From another forum:

Quote
Per Adam Weatherby (He announced it yesterday)

quote:
When we launched the 6.5 Wby RPM it was the ideal cartridge for our Backcountry series of rifles. However, there are many times I really wanted more bullet out of our smaller action and ultra lightweight rifles. Well, SAAMI officially approved the 338 Weatherby Rebated Precision Magnum this week as the 16th cartridge in the Weatherby lineup. I’m happy to say I’ve taken moose, elk and bear with it the past couple seasons and was thrilled with the results as I was able to carry a 6.2 lb rifle setup (including scope and mounts) and shoot a 225 grain bullet at over 2,800 fps. I truly believe this cartridge will enable us to provide the best big bore backcountry setup available!

However, we aren’t launching any ammunition or rifles at this time in this new round as our priority remains to first catch up on the all-time ammo demand for our existing customers looking for Weatherby ammunition. Be sure to check back later this year for product introductions.

Is that what's known as a "virtual product launch" ?...

It's you and the bullet, and all the rest is secondary.

Mark V rifles can be had for $1300 ish or so. Ammo will probably start at around $50 a box in their select line, probably with a 225 Interlock if I had to guess.

They only announced it because it has passed SAAMI, and they knew people would notice and be asking about it.

I will say, I do like the looks of the Mk V hunter model. For some reason I assumed the 6.5 rpm was only available in their more expensive back country models, obviously I'm wrong there.

That 338 rpm looks like a great cartridge.

I personally appreciate every new medium bore cartridge that comes out.

I dont find any of them to be be rendundant whatsoever.

Nowhere near as redundant, as the sea of 20 something caliber gopher bullet crowd.

A moderate powered 338 is an ideal mountain rifle in grizzly or brown bear country.

On my 338 rcm carbine, the scope is sighted to a 225 grain bonded boat tail for the mountains or winter caribou.

The open sights are sighted to a 275 grain swift a-frame load. My intent, is to stash the scope after a sheep is taken, and hike out with the 275 grainers for any unexpected, head on shots.

Its not a very useful cartridge seeing they have no Rifles or ammo for them and probably wont for a long time.Buy a 338 Federal and go hunt.

Guess the only real purpose for this is if you want a .338 in the 6-lug Mark V.

6 lug in the Back Country will be a few pounds lighter than a Mk V in 338 Win. It'll most likely come with a brake, seeing as Adam Weatherby talked about hunting with a sub 7lbs rifle. Not sure what capacity is on the RPM, but if they get 4 down vs 3 in a mag, again, lighter rifle with more firepower. Seems to be aimed directly at the more serious backcountry hunters who hunt in bear territory.

They could've tried to resurrect the 338-06, but Adam appears to want to distance himself a bit from the old school ways of Roy.

Maybe we'll luck out and the next RPM will be a 416

In a lightweight 6-lug, it’ll cross your eyes.
