Good friends Bud----guy on the right---- has some excellent Dogs so out we went....

These three Beagles are top shelf....Ran a couple Rabbits in circles for a good time...One for over an hour. Ended up with 5 in around 4 hours.

Then we went back and got his Mountain Cur Squirrel Dog....Which was amazing. When he started barking at the base of a tree, he wasn't lying. Shot 4 with .22LR's in around 2 hours.

Been forever since I did a bunny hunt.

Rabbit numbers are so low by us. Almost non existent.

Well....When we were kids and supposed to be home at dark, my Grandmother would stand on the porch and yell "Butchie!!!!" Then when the old gang gets together, it is fun to watch them say Butch and then look like they messed up. laugh

Anyway grin the guy who owned the Dogs had each on a tracker collar, It was interesting to look at where they went and see that a Rabbit would make his circle and the tracker lines for practical purpose would be on top of each other. The one they chased for over an hour made 4-5 big circles and the lines were practically on top of each other. I saw that Rabbit twice and when he hit any open area he was on a full out run and the Dogs were 50-75 yards behind. One guy finally got a shot, and he immediately said game over and went underground.

And the Mountain Cur was special...He would be just on a slow walk thru the wood and then would throw his head up and start barking at a tree.

Excellent! Love listening to beagles chase bunnies. With the added benefits of eating rabbits, they make genuinely good table fare.

Very nice!! I'd love to hunt behind a squirrel dog some day. Hank likes to chase 'em and will retrieve them, but won't tell me if they are in the tree.

Growing up, both grandpa and Dad always had at least a couple of beagles a piece. Following them is very good fun. Hardly enough rabbits outside of towns anymore to justify keeping any. Very good times.

The Mountain Cur Squirrel Dog was something special to watch...If he only thought there may be one he gave out a quick yep, made up his mind or moved on. If he was sure, then he opened up strong and didn't quit. A few times there were trees with holes and we couldn't locate a Squirrel. The others, if you looked hard there was the Squirrel. I don't know if he smelled, heared, saw them or all three...but he was a Squirrels worst predator. A good Bino was an asset in finding the Squirrel.

The Guy who owns the Dogs is close to 100 Rabbits and my Bud who hunts with him casually is at around 25

Great. Didn't think there were that many rabbits and squirrels in the whole state. Awesome.

My brother had a little dog that loved to chase squirrels. With that dog and a Nylon 66, he was death on those things. Good times.

Hazen, used to Deer drive with two other guys who were dedicated Rabbit hunters. They hunted together and each had a goal of 100 a year. When it came time for another Dog, they would check with this guy to see if he had anything available.

Bunnies and beagles - a big part of my teen years that I miss terribly. It was what we did nearly every Saturday, fall and winter. The occasional covey of quail added to the fun.

It's been over 40 years, the guys I hunted with have passed, cottontails are scarce, quail are nonexistent, and some of the fields we hunted are now developed, but I cherish the memories of good times afield.

Yes, the first Rabbit those three opened up on....or were hot on, and coming my way brought back some old memories.
