I was writing him in the late 1980s encouraging him to run for president, and he wrote back. I still have his responses somewhere. I then met and had a conversation with him at a fund raising dinner. Naturally, he had my vote whenever he ran. He made a bad mistake in his VP pick, though, when he ran as an independent.

Even if Ukraine was admitted into NATO, that does not portend a massive NATO/EU offensive against Russia. Nope, Europe has no interest in conquering russian territory. Europe wants stable borders & no military activity. It is in Europe's economic/political/energy interest for russia to be a trading partner (in anything other than energy, where Putin would use that as a cudgel).
Ukraine's NATO membership was a ruse. Putin attacked Crimea in 2014 to regain a critical sea port to the free world (also why the commies took Poland and the Baltic States), and suffered no negative consequences. Lesson learned. Keep doing more until the political and economic repercussions become unbearable.
China is watching. Closely.
