i was the successful bidder on a valmet 412ST 12ga/30-06. it is an attractive gun. the problem is it does not fire. Is this common? what is the cure? ( the seller mentioned one small ding in the buttstock in the ad. i do not think the seller knew that it does not fire)

Those have a mechanical barrel selector as I recall, vs. a recoil operated one. Maybe there is something hung up and it isn't resetting

they have a mechanical barrel selector on the trigger. and a safety on the tang. i read that the triggers were mechanical and do not need recoil to fire the second barrel. it is not cocking them when i break open the action.

Doesn't fire at all? I'd get a couple of dummy rounds and pull the stock and see what's wrong. Either the safety is not working, it isn't cocking the hammers/strikers or someone has sprayed cheap lube in the action and it has turned into varnish. The last was quite common when WD-40 first came out. I have made some money on that stuff cleaning sxs that got it sprayed in the trigger openings. I left my sewing machine home for a number of years and my mom lubed it it has taken years of good lube to free it.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

These are simple enough that about any Competent gunsmith could do that. You can do it yourself, probably.

Take the recoil pad or buttplate off and take off the buttstock. Spray the inside of the receiver from the back with brake cleaner, let it soak, and do it again several times. Then lubricate lightly with a premium gun oil.

As erich said, it might not be getting cocked. If nothing is damaged inside this should cure that condition.

They are VERY reliable guns. I'm sure the fix will be simple & you will be well served for a long time.
