Folks,
I've got a chance to buy a Remington 25-,06 in a Ruger No.1b.. haven't seen the rifle yet but I'd like to use it for Wt. deer and varmints, groundhogs & coyotes. What can you all tell me about it ? Is it finnicky to load for , or will it handle both the heavier and light bullets.
Thank you in advance for your time and help .

None of my have ever been hard to get shooting. Anything from 4350 to Retumbo worked great. I use the little Swift Sciroccos with RL26 in mine.

Is it an early red pad rifle or newer black pad era No.1?

3dtestify,
It's a red pad. I have a red pad 1a in .243. Mine has the 3-screw trigger. Also, I have an extra 3 screw trigger and a kepplinger.
I'm not familiar at all with the 25-06. Are you? i want it for 200-pound deer and groundhogs along with the occasional coyote.

243 and 257 Bob put down whitetails without issue. No reason a 25-06 won't, too, if you're using a bullet meant for bigger game.

My stainless #1 in 25-06 shoots awesome. I have tried factory 100 gr TSXs and 110 NABS and both shoot under MOA with the TSXs around 3/4. I’m very pleased and enjoy mine.

My RU77V in 25-06, unmodified, did the old "Hammer of Thor" thing on over 20 caribou over several years, using 120 gr Speer c&c hand loads. I tried some lighter bullets (no longer remembered), for which accuracy was fine (MOA), but I did not like the terminal performance on the caribou.

Then again, they weren't groundhogs.... smile

Currently own a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle and a 700 Sendero,both in 25-06
Along with 250 Savage and 257 Roberts,both 700 Classics.
And have owned a few 257Wby's, a 25 Souper and other 1/4 bores through the years
1/4 bores are easy to load for, very forgiving and every accurate if you take just a little time
to work up a load for them.
You won't regret getting it, only selling it

I use my 25-06s (Ruger Express’ and Dakota Classic Deluxe) on Pronghorn and Deer. I have two lady friends, wives of two buddies of mine, who use their 25-06s for Elk in Colorado. I’ve never used one on Elk because I have bigger rifles, but these two ladies are very small, petite women ( about 80-100 lbs.) so I think their choice is sound, and they are successful to boot. They usually shoot within 100 yards, and place their shots very well.

My son shoots a Ruger M77 Mark II in .25-06 that seems to shoot everything well. We settled on a 120 Speer BTSP because it has a decent BC, is cheap so he could shoot a bunch and I have no complaints on terminal performance for deer/antelope/coyotes.

Mine is a Winchester 70 with a McGowen 1:9. I thought the faster twist would help increase the odds of shooting the heavies better but it seems to prefer stuff closer to 100 grains. The 100 Speer flat base seems to work just fine and scoots right along.

It used to be a .257 AI that got .25-06 velocities. The 100 grain SGK shot well and killed stuff dead but didn't penetrate as well as I would like so you had to be a little careful on placement. Worked great behind the shoulder.

Buy it.

Load 100 gr Ballistic Tips at 3200

Go forth, & kill stuff.

Take pictures.

So many great bullets for the 25-06 have been discontinued, such as the very tuff Hornady 120 gr hollow point which was a big game bullet and my favorite 25-06 bullet. This bullet does show for re-sale from time to time on the campfire classifieds. Speer has also discontinued some bullet offerings as well. Thankfully Barnes has the 100 gr ttsx to fill the gap. The .25 caliber is sliding away in popularity in favor of the 6.5's.

In my opinion the 25-06 kills just like a .270 and in some cases a little faster with negligible recoil. The 25-06 shooters/hunters here on the campfire are keeping the 25-06 alive and well among rifle loonies. Very rarely is there a thread complaining on .25 cal bullets past and present on bullet performance.

Bob Milek writing's in the 80's made the 25-06 main stream.......thank you Bob.

It has been years since I had a .25-06, but everything from whitetail does to caribou bulls died very quickly.

The various Nosler and Barnes bullets were great. The sierra gamekings were accurate but came apart very fast inside beasts.

Great cartridge. If I resurrect another junker push feed model 70 it will likely end up as a .25-06

I have an interesting history with the 25/06.
When I was 12 I convinced my Uncle to buy a model 700 , one of the very first available in Canada in late 1969. Previously it was a wildcat.
He was a nuts and bolts handliader and shooter.
He free floated the barrel and glass bedded it and eventually I ended up with it.
It has always shot incredibly well, anyone can do well with it. I used it for many years, using the Nosler Partition took several bull elk and moose etc.
I quit using it as I got old due to the long barrel.
The Ruger # 1 should solve the overall rifle length issue.
I have a Browning B78/ .270 win which is so handy and probably about the same length and weight as the #1

I read many...many years ago on the campfire the 25-06 was the unofficial "Texas" state flower.
