I enjoyed a pheasant shoot Friday. Using my 12 gauge Navy Arms percussion shotgun adds another level of fun.

Have one that looks just like that. What are your loads?

My gun is choked IC/Mod. These loads pattern very well in my gun.

90 grains Goex 2-f. One nitro card on the powder, half of a lubed cushion wad with a thin overshot card on top of it, 1 1/4 ounce of lead shot (#6 for pheasants), and an over shot card I punch from 1/8 inch thick sheets of hobby shop cork. The thin over shot card on the cushion wad prevents shot from embedding in the wad and eliminates the occasional doughnut hole pattern. The cork over shot card disintegrates and will not disrupt the pattern.

For clays, doves, and quail I load 80 grains and 1 1/8 ounce of shot with the same wad and card combination. It pays to experiment with wad and card combinations on the pattern board with muzzleloaders.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your load. Iโ€™d interested in trying the cork over shot card.

Very nice prairie dog shooter! I kinda regret getting rid of my ML shotgun, had a lot of fun with it over the years...

The muzzleloading shotgun is just as effective as my Red Label. It does take a minute longer to reload but kills just as dead.

Hens are perfectly legal and allowable on the preserve I was shooting. And they taste just as good as roosters.

Back when there were plenty of wild birds in PA, the state was divided into two zones. In the North, you could shoot both sexes, I suppose because most were stocked. Now theyโ€™re pretty much all stocked birds, and you must buy a Pheasant Stamp to hunt them, and both sexes are legal statewide. The season runs very late now too, into the next year. Might give it a go this year.

The preserve I hunt releases the birds. They are raised in very large flight pens and are strong fliers. Especially the Chuckar. They do hold tight for the pointers but you better not miss or they are gone out of sight.

Black Powder on pheasants raises the bar on the sporting challenge and fun factor!
However, any misses will still get a warning look from my retriever that I better shape up or she will hunt elsewhere๐ŸฆŠ

Good show, I bet that was fun. I shoot a Berretta O/U MZL and have taken a number of grouse, woodcock and ducks with it, one oz. of lead or bismuth. I've been looking for one of the Pedrosoli Flint SXS's seems there are none to be had right now.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.
