Really nice grain flow through the grip. Hubba hubba. 24" barrel ?
My .416 Taylor is a Ruger MK II stainless (re-barreled .338 WinMag) with factory tupperware stock, 26" Shilen barrel. 8#2oz without scope & rings though it does have Dakota express sights and barrel band sling base. Twist is 1:14" and the muzzle diameter is 0.700" at 26". With 26" barrel and RL-15 (75.0 grains), F-215, R-P .458 WM brass necked down, 400-gr Hornady RNSN 5-yard velocity was 2418 fps average, 1.5 MOA for 3 shots.
And just think, easy to re-barrel to .458 WinMag

Ha ha ha ... and I necked up most of my .416 Taylor brass back to .458 Win Mag. Got 100 pieces of .416 Taylor headstamp from Quality Cartridge. But even they are at risk of conversion to .458 WinMag.

I like that recoil pad on the .416 Taylor. BTW, the .416 Taylor is actually the .416/.450 Watts Short. And Jeffery Epstein did not kill himself.

That's one fine rifle. Is that a QD ring system?

Man that's a nice one, if you wish CFE-223 will easily and safely power 400gr bullets to a real 2400 fps, BTDT, ragged hole accuracy to boot.

Roger that! Just yanking your chain, it is a well executed feature. Just between us, I even install them on many light recoiling rifles because they tend not to slip when rested on the butt. I had a fine rifle with steel butt plate slip on me once when I was crossing a fence. Pads tend not to do that.

That is a beautiful rifle in a very useful cartridge. I loved my 416 Taylor and still miss it. Hell of a coyote killer and works on elk also. Comforting to stand down a grizzly with. Easy to load for, lots of powders work for it. I mostly used Re15 for full loads. Best of luck with your rifle

Thats a gorgeous rifle congratulations. I have a Taylor built on a tang safety Ruger action. It's been to Africa, Elk hunting and deer camp. As mentioned it's a versatile caliber just as useful in the deer woods as on the African veld.

Really nice. Sold off my 416 rifles. Needed the funds for other things. I may have some Speer and Hornady bullets left over and I have an RCBS 416 350gr mould.

But you can run it at 2250 easy which should prove more.than adequate with a good 400 grain bullet on big game.

62 gr of H4895 with a 400 grainer gets 2150 or a bit more. Kicks like a .375 and duplicates the .404 or .450/500.

As the owner of one myself, I'd say that's a great idea! However, your biggest challenge will be finding dies since they're not made by any of the big makers these days. I was fortunate to find old sets from Lee and RCBS. CH4D makes them, but I've seen mentioned on here they're 2-3 years out on orders of anything not in stock.

Now, I’m thinking my tanger needs a new barrel. I sold all my 416 stuff when I sold my Ruger 416 Rigby. But I bet I can find what I’d need.

PA,
thankfully my gun came with dies, brass, bullets and some ammo!
Bugger, Ragged Hole Barrels may still have some 416 barrels on clearance. I ordered one myself since I was already ordering a barrel from them. Might do another 416T in a short barrel/micky stock for a good all weather compact thumper, and, I've got components!

It’s practice for the bigger game. Not nuts at all. I shot full power loads with 400 grain Swift A Frames in preparation for a trip to Africa in 05. Those days are behind me and therefore a reduced load will make a dandy deer rifle out of this.

That looks a bit like Frank Wells' work. Who is the maker? Unless I missed it I have not seen that yet in this thread. It's lovely. Frank built a 7mm Mag for me back in the early 90's and he was building Taylors at the time.

Always wanted one and if I was chasing brown bears in the salmon stream alders on a regular basis I would have one on a 80's "Classic Stainless" Mod. 70 action with a 22" tube. Did not know it could toss 400 grain bullets at 2,400 mv. I was thinking 325-35 grain Barnes X bullets.
That is a beaut of a rifle! Congrats. Is that the old Plington rings?

Cheers, Rex Sorry for the absence boys! Crazy couple of months. I cannot verify anything for sure, but I was told by a friend of the guns previous owner, who is a famous gunsmith himself, by the initials D.E.... that he thinks this was indeed built by Frank Wells. He mentioned a 416 built by frank but couldn't recall details. It sure does look like rifles he had built. I have still yet to fire it, but it's on the short list of guns to take to the range. I recently took out the P-H 1400M in 404 qi bought from the same estate. Recoil was nothing like what i expected

Also came with dies, bullets, brass and ammo. Out a Leupold 1.5-5×20. Put a few rounds down range with it. Hoping I can get some more time with it at the range soon

I miss my Taylor as well, but it was nowhere near as lovely as Milehighshooter's rifle. I supplied my gunsmith, Val Albert of Medford, Oregon, with a surplus VZ-24 Mauser. He turned down the bolt, opened the bolt face, added a three-position wing safety, fitted and chambered a Pac-Nor barrel and bedded it in a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock. I only did range work with it before trading it to fund another hair-brained scheme, but it was an accurate "workhorse" .416 that I found comfortable to shoot. Wish I had a photo of it.

I'm anxious to shoot it! Just haven't had time, outdoors retail gets insanely busy around Sept and doesn't stop until after Christmas.
I already have plans for another 416T in the works, just due to circumstance. Had to buy back a rifle from a customer that had a bolt locking up. Smith told him it was a headspace issue, I had a better smith take a look, lug set back (1909 Argy). But it came in a McMillan stock with a big barrel channel due to the builder being silly with the 308 Norma barrel and leaving the entire shank intact. I found a deal on a closeout ss 416 Wilson barrel, and it sits damn near prefect in the stock. Just need to get the 1909 heat treated.
Figure I've already got the components, might as well have a rainy day 416T to go along with the pretty one

I have some 300 grain Hawk bullets loaded up to try for deer season. I had a Burris 1 3/4 X 5 on it but it took a crap so I'm waiting on a Leopold to come in. I haven't shot this since 05 and am looking forward to using it again

Anyone interested in posting loads up for their 416T's? You bet, max load in my BRNO action 416 Taylor: Necked down WW 458 WM brass [heresy] lol 400gr Hornady or partition 77.5gr CFE-223 Fed-215 or CCI-250 3.320" COL Vel 2407 fps Start at 70gr and work up with a chronograph please. That would be nicely fast for a 24" barrel. Noted, for future reference. My 26" barrel might add 50 fps to that. With Shilen No. 5 Sporter, 1:14" twist, Ruger Mk II in factory Tupperware, rifle weighs 8# 2 oz as here: My old .416 Taylor (circa 1999) liked 75.0 grains of Reloder-15 with the 400-gr Hornady RNSN of yore. R-P .458 WM brass necked down, forgive me, F-215 primer, 3.320" COL, crimped in factory cannelure, 80*F 26" barrel: 2417 fps mean for 5-yard chrono Nowadays I would substitute Varget for the RL-15 and work up a grain or two higher. Or use CFE-223 like gunner500 says. The .416 Taylor started off as the .416/.450 Watts Short in the 1950s, according to James Watts. He gave some dummy cartridges to Jack O'Connor who showed them to Robert Chatfield-Taylor. Then about 1973 Bob had a Winchester M70 so chambered, the first ".416 Taylor." He did 2400 fps with 400-grainers in a 22" barrel using IMR-3031. About 1974, Sturm Ruger made up an M77 .416 Taylor with 24" barrel and loaned it to Ken Waters. Ken claimed 2447 fps with 400-grainer and IMR-4320, from the 24" barrel. Bob Hagel also independently developed a .416/.338 Winchester Magnum Wildcat, though he also used necked-down .458 WinMag brass for that, about same time as Taylor. A different chamber reamer and reloading dies exist for that one, close to the .416 Taylor, but no cigar.

Think a 26"-barreled .416 Taylor is odd ? Me too. Another oddball, my first .416-caliber rifle, made in 1987 by a gunsmith who said he was allergic to epoxy, so I bedded it myself in a very early Bell & Carlson "Carbelite" stock so slick I had to make grip panels out of roughed-up epoxy. That was one year before the .416 RemMag burst upon the scene. DOH ! Douglas No. 5 Sporter, 24" long, 1:12" twist, threaded for muzzle brake, 8.5 lbs as shown above except minus the slip-on pad/LOP adjuster, The .416 Barnes Supreme hailed from the late 1950s, before George Hoffman's pet .416 Hoffman, another blown out full length .375 H&H case, the wheel was re-invented many times, not to mention Uncle John Riley Buhmiller who probably beat them all ! My floor plate popped open one time too many: Notice how elegantly timed the screw slot is, please.

Another 8.5 lbs rifle of .416 caliber: HS Precision stock for M70 Winchester was purchased at Sportsman's Whorehouse in early part of this century. South Dakota made stock for South Dakota cartridge on a Connecticut Yankee action with a West Virginia barrel, Douglas 1:12" twist No. 5 sporter, 24" length. OK recipe for 8.5# .416 Taylor also. Stock weighs 2.5 lbs, M70 Winchester barreled action with Talley bases and banded front sight weighs 6.0 lbs.

A lighter .416 Taylor could be patterned after the .416 Ruger Alaskan 20" barrel: A 1.5-pound stock would get this down to 7.0 lbs. IIRC, the unaltered canoe paddle weighs 1.75 lbs. The Tupperware on the 26" Taylor above weighs 1.5 lbs. High-tech 1-pound stocks do exist.

Indisputably true, but having been down a very similar road with this same rifle in 404/375 Ruger, it now sits in a different stock at 9 lbs. all up total weight. I learned the hard and painful way that's a good weight in this class of rifle. BTW I shoot several 458 caliber rifles without being unusually bothered by recoil, as a frame of reference.

If I thought I'd ever have the slightest chance of getting back to Africa I'd find where you store that rifle and find a way to "acquire" it. It's hard to type with a hard tongue.

Look how a 6#12oz rifle (.458 B&M) can become a 9#13oz rifle with no change of stock: Changing the above Tupperware stock to a B&C Medalist will add only 5 ounces, maybe.

Sir Jerry is doing the holy roller (drag racer) speaking in tongues again. Glad he got a minute to send photos of his .416 Taylor M98 and some lingo I understand. Vz24 98 Mauser 24" Douglas barrel is 0.725" diameter at muzzle B&C stock all steel cerakote Timney trigger said to be a one-holer at 100 yards with 400-grainers at 2400 fps using CFE-223: Some brass made from .338 WM W-W Super: Some brass with .416 Taylor head stamp:

What a coincidence ! Same Dakota rear sight as on my Ruger, which needs a B&C stock to replace the Tupperware: The .416 Taylor and a .458 WM make a nice battery, backup for any game anywhere anywhen. And they don't kick as much as some loads do in a .577 T. rex:

LOL, thanks for posting the pics Sir, the 416T is a fine and serious cartridge, i set my rifle up for all game anywhere in any weather condition just like you mentioned, the 350gr BBW#13 solids run a hundred fps faster with RL-15 and land with the 400 NPT's at 100, that would easily handle anything, Steenbok, WT deer to Moose to Ele. That young buck loosing that TRex is learning a bit about the easiest of the physics scales, momentum, [mass in motion] and recoil velocity LMAO!!!!!

I came close to building one many years ago and the 416 Rem M70 killed that desire. Sir, if you ever sell that rifle please put me in the front of the line! I love that combo and working towards it… I am certainly new to these calibers and the 416taylor is really a cool one! If I could have found dies I’d have likely put one together! Congratulations that’s a beautiful rifle!

Beautiful rifle you have there. I have an Interarms Mark X chambered in 416 Taylor improved I picked up on gunbroker a few years ago. Called C4HD (think that’s the name) and ordered some dies. I use mine on whitetail and have had great luck with it. It has 26” barrel and I have two loads I’ve used mainly. First load is 350 gr Speer mag tip with RL15 at 2610 fps. Second load is 300 gr TSX with IMR 4166 at 2640 fps. Great cartridge that doesn’t give up very much to my 416 rem mag.

I still have an inkling to build another 416T since I have a barrel and action, but might have to put that on hold for a bit. Another Frank Wells 416 has fallen into my lap! This one is a laminate Rem Mag. Just need to sell a few guns to fund it Likely my factory 375 M70, since I'm having a pre64 custom built. I'll pay pics when/if it comes home

For some reason JES doesn't do anything in .416. I ended up using Dan Pederson with very mixed results. If I wanted another Taylor I'd just get a rebarrel. What a great cartridge it is!
