Any “love” for this rifle? Just placed an order for one in 500 S&W (12-14 months). If you own a rifle in this caliber would appreciate some reloading info as well as general feedback on your opinion of the rifle itself.

I had one for 5 years or so and just sold it to finance another rifle project. Excellent rifle very well made,,breaking it it is a long project though, mine was the 22" version and super accurate, hitting floating targets at 100yds easily. I plinked with 350gr Hornadys and killed 4 brown bears on our property with 500 Hornady's. 3 one shot kills and the last one I was shooting at a dark shape in between our Karelians with reflective collars at midnite and gave him a triple tap at about 25' away.

Rifle has the standard 18 inch barrel, fancy walnut stock option, and scout scope rail. Thinking about installing a 8 MOA red dot style sight. What type powder are you using with the 350 gr Hornadys? I don’t think they make the 500’s any more.

It’s none of my business, but 8 moa seems a bit large , unless all of your shooting will be up close and on large game! I’m using a 3 moa on my handgun….wouldn’t want it any larger. JMO. memtb

I own a couple of 3 moa Fast Fires mounted on handguns. They seem a little small to me. This is why I want to try a 8 on the model 89. Shots are pretty much limited to 50 yards or less on our property when deer hunting. 6 might be perfect if I could find one.

I have an 89 in 500sw and a 90in 454casull. Love em. The 500 wears an ultradot as it killed off 2 burris scout scopes which now reside on the 454. (Great customer service by burris). Havent killed anything with the 454 but i have with a 460 bfr and the lever gun runs basically the same velocities as the 460. The 460has accounted for 13 animals in africa including a cape buffalo as has my fa454casull so no probs putting big things down with either. That said the 500 with a 325 aframe put down a large waterbuff in a most spectacular fashion.

I will also add the 500 can be loaded to be a ballistic twin to a 45/70 but handles recoil much much better than the marlin 45/70. Both are a real pleasure to use. They are a fine gun easily worth the money.

Snowwolfe,

I have a lot of love for the Bighorn 89, just haven’t convinced myself to spend the money to order one.

I have loaded 350 grain plated, jacketed, and cast lead swc’s with 16.0 grains of Hodgdon Titegroup. Good shooting rounds out of my 8 3/8” 500 S & W wheelgun.

I’ve also loaded 325 grain Speer uni-cor HP’s and 300 grain Hornady FTX’s with 42.0 grains of Hodgdon Lil Gun. These loads were very stout. Not sure what you’re hunting, but seems to me the 300 grain FTX would scream out an 18” barrel pretty good.

I will be interested in your loads and results, and overall opinion of the rifle when you finally get it.

Happy shooting!

I have been trying to find one in the secondary market. I would be happy with either a 475 Linebaugh (have a FA83 in 475) or the 500 S&W.

Pretty much unobtanium.

Might have to order...

Waiting has given me the opportunity to stock up on bullets. Think I now have a lifetime supply of Hornady 350 grain soft points.
Boredom while waiting is a bad thing. Now I been kicking around the idea of buying a 1886 in 45-90.
Don’t understand how down sizing my collection works. After making a serious effort to free up some room in my safes I added six guns in the last 12 months.

LOL, we must be related.

Been searching those, too.

Was a nice pair of DeLuxe w/consecutive numbers on GB last week. Tried to get the seller to let me just buy one. Tried to find a buddy to buy the second.

Just don't want to be saddled by two of them!

Bighorn has reloading info on their website. I have a 22 “ 89. Magnaport helps tame the muzzle rise. Haven’t killed anything with it. Most accurate and usable loads seem to be the Hornady FTX and Swift A Frame. I mounted a Deltapoint pro for a while. 100 yards is the max I am comfortable with.

I have one on order, and although I have not [bleep] one, I stopped by BHA in June, at their new location in Cody’s Wyoming. I now have one on order, a 16.5” 500S&W.
Thinking of planning a Canadian bear hunt to use it on.
