The best bet is the 170 grain Flat nose. Factory ammo featured a 180 grain FN but those were never available to reloaders

The 170 grain Speer Hot Core should be your first selection.
The Speer bullet is tough, has a good BC and is easy to load for accuracy. I suggest a COL of 2.55" to start.

40.0 grains of Hodgdon 4064 will push the 170 grain Speer to a little over 2,350 fps and this is an excellent deer and average size pig load.
Hodgon Varget for higher velocity with best accuracy.
Alliant Reloder 15 for highest velocity,
The newer powders work well with 8808 maybe the best. Reloder 15 is hard to beat for all around use.

The 170 grain Hornady has too wide a meplat and you will need to shorten your overall length to chamber rounds in the short ball seat of the Winchester.

You will find with medium burn powders the case capacity at 2.55" COL will just let you reach max pressure (estimating). It really is a well balanced cartridge.
The 170 grain Speer bullet loaded above 2,400 fps has a 240 yard point blank range on an 8" target circle.

I will second the Speer 170 over 40.0 grs of 4064. My Marlin rechamber loves this load and it’s deadly on whitetail.

When it comes to 170 FP's, you're going to have a hard time finding a bad one. I'm an old Hornady & Rem Core Lokt fan, but I have personally witnessed excellent performance from most of the big boys. Rem, Win, Fed, Hornady; they all make a great 170fp.
