I used Dura tracs (studded) on my 1 ton Ram. The only tire yet to leave me on the side of the road with a flat. Did not do well in deep snow. I took them off and put them on my 3/4 ton plow truck to wear them out. I had to resort to chains to get unstuck with them, but that could have happened with other tires to maybe. I had Toyo Open Country MTs on a 3/4 ton. Great in mud and deep, wet snow. Scary on snowpacked roads and ice. Always wondered what they would be like siped. I did sipe some Firestone MTs. They proved to be the best overall winter tire I ever had.

It seems the people who really like Dura Tracs are running them on 1/2 tons and SUVs. We are running Cooper Rugged Trex on 2 SUVs currently with the Firestones on a third. The Coopers are not as good as the Firestones since they don't paddle through deep snow as well but are as good on the highway. I would also like to try the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs.

Not to rain on your parade. But I drive essentially the same truck, super cab shortbed F250 gasser with the rear locker. I have a set of Toyo CTs on it, about as aggressive as the Duratrac but a little more traditional lug shape for a mild “mud” tire, they’re a size bigger than standard 295/75/18 I believe.

It is the best truck at getting stuck I’ve ever owned. I think it’s due to the newer generation of trucks having super stiff frames, way more power than available even 10 years ago, and the nanny controls that cut power to one wheel or another or apply the brake to stop you from spinning. It “HAS” to be in 4x4 to go places my older trucks would have went without a bobble.

Dry Bermuda grass on a slight incline? Put it in 4HI. Rained a 1/4 inch yesterday, better go ahead and put it in 4HI and don’t forget to turn the traction control off. Muddy spot behind a terrace in the pasture, just go ahead and get the tractor and chain. I had high hopes when I ordered it with the selectable locker and put a good set of tires on it, sadly I was mistaken.

I’d hate to have a 2wd of the same model, it would be completely useless.

I see you have a winch, I think that’s a great idea. I’d look into a PullPal or at least a post driver and a few T posts you could strap to the deck to have something to winch too.

Oh and the things I always have in any rig I drive regularly.

Blackjack tire plug kit
Can of Fixaflat and 12v bumblebee compressor
Small spade
Estwing 42” axe
40’ of 3/8” chain and a couple shackles
10ton bottle jack with a 4way and some cribbing

Everyone gives me a hard time about having all that stuff, until they need to use something.

the kid....yes you have to turn off that dam traction control....coming from a f350 6.7 crew cab short bed 4wd....I think alot of problem is not enough weight in the bed. the dog box set up will help alot with that.....good list.

ranger...?

260rem...always use weather tech but they have curled...going to try husky....

thanks guys ....new ideas and thoughts.....good and bad are appreciated.....this is strictly a hunting truck .....need to think about a rear winch with the flatbed set up....bob

Husky liners are a heavier, more robust, construction than Weathertech. I only settle for Weathertech if Husky liners aren't available for the application that I need. I never buy new vehicles, my newest is 11 years old and my oldest is 20 years old, so sometimes the correct Husky liners have been discontinued. Heck, I will even mix Husky and Weathertech if only a partial set of Huskys are available.

BobMt,

Get yourself a Wyeth-Scott More Power Pulley 3-Ton hand winch for times when you need to pull yourself sideways to get off of a tree or rock (used in conjunction with your other recovery gear), or to do general lifting/pulling chores anywhere. Highlift jacks are good for lifting but will get you hurt trying to pull with them.

To add to the kids list, I also carry:
Small (8x10) tarp
Framing hammer
Stanley shortcut saw
Tie wire
Zip ties
Wd40
1lb proane torch
In the non-frozen months, baby wipes and/or hand cleaning wipes
Couple rolls of blue shop towels
Channel locks, needle nose, wire cutters and a 4-way screwdriver in one of thie small Klein tools pouches under the drivers seat. I use those all the time. Should throw a small crescent wrench in there too.
I have taken to carrying the hi lift in addition to a bottle jack.
I carry a pretty decent tool set with 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" sockets/ratchets, wrenches and screwdrivers. Probably overkill, but having it with me has saved me a lot of grief.
I carry two 30k tow straps instead of chain, but chain could certainly be handier in some cases.

I carry a bunch of that stuff too. Rubbermaid makes a wide flat tote that you can fit three of under the back seat in a Supercab. I generally only have two, one with the spillable stuff, PB Blaster, Fixaflat, propane bottle, emergency beer, etc, and one with the tools. Helps keep everything from rolling around loose.

And I always keep a box of shop towels, the paper kind most often used for bathroom emergencies and a Helly Hansen PVC raincoat. Raincoat is a godsend if you have to climb under the rig when it’s muddy, keeps your seat some semblance of clean when you take it off before getting back in.

Thawing locks and other frozen stuff, starting a fire in a hurry, etc. Just a good reliable heat/flame source. Can of mapp gas can be better if its really cold, and the torch will burn either.

Oh.... Also a good emergency cigar lighter. smile

Dewalt 60V battery chain saw.
Best tool I ever bought to carry in my truck, cuts way better and last longer than one would think.
No stinky gas to deal with and with a spare battery you can cut a lot of camp wood in a hurry, I have yet to need the spare battery.

Yeah, they sell the plastic " feet" to put down,
but you won't feel as bad leaving a piece of
wood buried 2 feet in the soup if need be.
The hole in the corner is so you can retrieve it
way easier if it's not too deep and impossible to
fish out. You can poke a pole or something in
and pry and break the suction of mud or fix a
bolt through a chain link and use a chain to
retrieve it. Or just leave it since it didn't cost
$15.00 - $20.00 like the plastic ones

If you've been in the soupy muck or deep

I have friends with the ARB and a pancake tank. They are pleased. Fixed unit.

My 3500 has a RV compressor (came with the truck as a custom configuration)... dual tanks... dual airbags (3.5 ton loading etc.).

I bought one of these... jury still out. Seems solid on the build. I will add a spare tank or two with QDs.

Which Nitto did you not like? On my '11 6.7L F250 I've had the Trail Grappler, Terra Grappler, and Exo Grappler x 2. The Exo's are the only set I would (and did) buy a 2nd time. Short of going full-on soft-compound "snow tire" like Blizzak the Exo is the best I've used on packed snow/ice.

If you hate chain and you hate tow straps, you can get some good synthetic winch line cheap these days. In my offroad rig I have a hunk of 75' or so I think and it is rated over 20klbs. Also have a cheapo amazon organizer to keep the toolbox mayhem down.

Local fisherman, while a soldier in Vietnam did some rigging and splicing for his Sargent etc.. When he came home he took his skill and networking to form a company that now builds helicopter "Fast Lines" for the military (GSA Schedule stuff). Company became huge in a tiny tiny town. My guess is that every "Fast Line" used by any Vet here... or any SEAL Team currently... came from Diggs, VA.

Ocean Products Research https://www.opr-rope.com/ (FYI, their website is hacked at the moment, so link is a no go). Facebook link is here with a phone number... https://www.facebook.com/oprrope/

SUPER FRIENDLY PEOPLE!!!

Modern ropes like Spectra or Dyneema etc. are insanely strong and lightweight. Like pick up a Cummins engine with a 1/4" rope strong.

9mm rope is over 7 tons on breaking.

AMAZING STUFF... but it hates sharp edges.

I’m using Terra Grapplers for “summer tires” on a 2nd set of wheels. They’re pretty squirrely towing anything @ under 80# PSI, even my boat which is ~4K# all-in. The Exo w/3rd sidewall belt is very stable with a load.

Also, in regards to your OP. I keep a High-Torque Dewalt impact driver, 1-set each SAE and Metric deep sockets, 24” 1/2” drive breaker-bar, and 4-ton bottle-Jack behind the back seat.

Your gonna need a bigger truck or pull a trailer for all the stuff recommended. Sell the Ford and buy a Toyota. You won't need half that stuff. smile smile

I keep most of the small crap in my toolbox in one of these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DIMTWCS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1

I think that's the exact model, but nor really a recommendation. I think the handle ripped off when I tried to lift it. But it does keep the box organized-ish when hauling all the fluids for the truck, plus all the fluids for a couple other machines, plus all the crap previously mentioned. I even have enough room most times to put the shovels and the hi-lift in the toolbox so I can use the whole 8 feet of bed. Crazy talk I know.

Haven’t heard mention of a spare serpentine belt and a good flashlight. And/or elastic banded headlamps. Cheap or expensive, take your pick. Like mentioned, I also carry a Bernzomatic propane torch (we just call them turbo torch). You can cook hotdogs with it too. Had a friend pull out a Jetboil. Instant coffee or hot freeze-dried meal. Damn if that didn’t hit the spot!

Oh yeah, I always have a window Mount for a spotting scope and something to drape over the door in case you want to poke a rifle out. Just in case. 🥹

Edit... OPR can also splice in eyes or whatnot. Full service Company.

I stopped in Ocean Products Research on Thursday and asked Terry for a price on "100 feet of 1/2" Spectra (Amsteel) with one eye." $300 + tax.

Stuff retails at $3.50 a foot.

I know... crazy expensive, but about 25,000 pound of usable strength.

The 1/4" is around 7,000 pound of usable strength.

Tire chains that fit correctly, while still having clearance lock-to-lock......... under any condition.
