That's what the extremists do. They take nothing for backup, zero. They calculate their food and water to the last sip or calorie. They won't take a stove, just food that can be eaten cold. The "Surviving a Cold Wet Night" thread has tips and insight on how ultra light I'm willing to go.

Went to Arctic Survival School at Eielson AFB, AK when it was -42* (at that temp, *F and *C are the same). We had a minimalist kit, but the necessary items were there.

Too little is too little.
