I own a companion. Big hunk of steel that i’ve found no real world use for, yet I Still can’t help but lust for a combat Bowie BK9.
Anyone else like these?

I’ve got a necker around somewhere.

Never took a liking to it.

I went through a pretty heavy camping and bushcraft period a few years back. I jumped on the "big knife" bandwagon as my wood processing tool instead of a hatchet. I debated between the Ontario RTAK II, the ESEE Junglas and the Becker BK9. I chose the ESEE Junglas since it came with a kydex sheath and micarta scales from the factory (vs the nylon sheath and grivory scales on the BK9).

I still have the Junglas and use it pretty regularly but not as much as I used to. After several years of use, I think the BK9 may be a slightly better design for regular chopping use. The handle has a much more pronounced hook at the pommel end and would keep the handle from slipping forward too much during use. The Junglas tends to slip a little and you have to reposition through heavy chopping tasks. Batoning would probably be similar performance but the grinds are different and may result in some difference. High saber grind on the BK9 vs full flat on the Junglas. In my area of coastal living, I'm more likely to be hacking through privet and palmettos than processing piles of wood for kindling. I really like the utility of the big knives and in my area, I think they blend the purposes between a hatchet and machete pretty well. Even ratting around on the hunting club, I keep the big knife handy for clearing shooting lanes or cleaning up around blinds and tree stands.

I am a fan, buy one and find a reason to use it! laugh

I do love a good chopper. Tim Olt made this one for me back in 2012. It's a beast. A2 steel.

I always loved the aesthetics of that blade Sam. I regret not getting one from Tim when he was doing these. I think he also made several from 52100. I bet A2 is an ideal steel for a big chopper like that.

sadly, Tim is reluctant to make those any longer. It takes a LOT of hard work, and he just can't charge what he should for them. I have never seen it's equal as a chopper though.

I’ve had one for at least 15 years and have used the bejeesus out of it.

I’ve had a handful of Becker’s over the years. The only two I still have is a BK-9 and a BK-62. The Bk-62 is a great knife, one of my favorites.
