My brother has been seeing a couple coyotes at his place, one of which has been regularly crossing his yard within a half hour of dark and sometimes again in the early AM. Unfortunately he is in a Rimfire only area and he owns only a 22LR and 17hmr as far as rimfires go. I sent him a box of 20gr CCI Gamepoints and a box of cci 40 gr Velocitors to sight his rifles with vs the 17gr Vmax and minimags he has.
He does NOT want to buy another rimfire and it will be at least a few weeks until I can get to his place to loan him a 22 Mag loaded with 40gr Gamepoints...a load I have killed several coyotes with out to 125. I dont need to hear opinions that neither are enough gun etc etc as I am aware its not the ideal choice BUT its the best he has so thats what hes gonna use if a shot presents.
He is not going to hunt them, just shoot if one is in the yard. Longest shot would be right around 60 yds.
Which rifle would you use in this situation, the 17 with 20gr Gamepoints or the 22lr with the velocitors?
Also those who have actually used either on a yote, how did they perform?

22lr would be my pick. Used to kill them with yellow jackets when I was younger. Of course the 22 mag would be much better, if he can wait until he can borrow yours.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Either will work fine.
The 17 would be my preference. We have killed several with both the Mach II and the HMR. They work better than they should. I have always used the V-Max but the Game points should give better penetration if needed.
Any good high velocity or hyper velocity HP should work in the 22. CCI Mini Mags, Stingers, Yellow Jackets, Power Points would probably kill quickest.

I have killed coyotes with both a 22 LR and a 17 HMR. The 17 worked the best.

Marktheshark: This is a "no brainer" - not even close situation! Use the 17 HMR! The several Coyotes I have taken with my 17 HMR have all been one shot kills (Hornady 17 grain V-Max bullets) - I can NOT say anything near the same with the many and varied 22 L.R. munitions I have shot Coyotes with over the last 6 decades. Go with the 17 HMR and careful shot placement = dead Coyote. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Shoot it in the lungs with the .22 so that it will run off and die somewhere else?

Even on something like a racoon, 22LR can be a weak kill(shot placement mostly) but the 17HMR takes the guesswork out of it, I have yet to connect with one and have it consider life after impact. It is a world of difference.
