Usually choked very tightly which can also be corrected.
They are generally lightweight. Many have cheekpieces which you may not like but also correctable.
I've got two that I've used for many years after extending the chambers/forcing cones and choking IC/Mod.
My opinion they are well made and of stronger design than a lot of currently available guns.
Certainly within the budget you've mentioned.
Agreed, and they’re often reasonable. Most postwar European 16s will be 70mm chambers. But I’ve deepened a lot of 65mm chambers. Takes @ 15 minutes and actually lowers chamber pressure. Those older guns in good shape are as safe as any gun made today, if not more so.

Traded into a 1937 LC Smith Field FW 16ga today. 2 3/4 chambers, 26" bbl's, choked cylinder and full. Clean shooter, looking forward to busting some clays this weekend.

Almost brought home a 1901 Parker 12ga as well, beautiful specimen with 2 1/2" chambers. Hefty guns compared to the Smiths.
