Were you having a problem with case head separation?

Sharpsman, I think I put you on the defensive and I didn't mean to.

I should have said I agree with you on headspace being rather important and that I do it a different way.

Please accept my apologies Sir.

When I first started reloading my 22-250 and 300 mag I had case head separation. The cure was to simply back the die out a bit. Over working cases I was. Edk

With the Whidden case gauge, you measure against Go/No Go Gauges? Or do you just go off the reamer print?

I take a reading off the fired case! THAT is the chamber dimension for that rifle or the headspace reading!. The reading will generally be at the 0 reading of the gauge or damn close to it! I adjust my resize die such that I get that same 'reading' on all of the fired cases that I resize. Generally I can get maybe three firings or so before I will have to bump the shoulder back a bit for easy bolt closure!

For many of my cartridges I just invert a 40 S&W case over the case mouth. The length of the whole shebang is my reference number. I size the rifle brass and check again with the "40 gauge." The difference in the lengths is the amount of shoulder bump.

Sounds very similar, if not the same as the RCBS Precision Mic.

Big target or no, that is a small group for 900 yards!

I do this with some cases but use a shellholder. Shell holders have a big enouph hole that it fits 6.5 and slightly bigger calibers. Works great! For checking headspace I'll measure a new piece of brass than use .5 thou scotch tape on the head of my bolt until I get pressure closing the bolt. My new rifle I just put together headapaced 2 thou with new lapua brass.

I'm leaning more toward God let your kingdom come than save the USA! I'm not sure if this mess can be saved?

OUTSTANDING Shooting at 900. Target size means nothing when your stacking them in there like that. Group size says it all. Your explanation for target shape and size makes perfect sense. Much easier to spot when getting dialed in while trying to read wind/mirage down range
