I have a bushmaster with a flash hider that I would like to remove. It’s attached with rocksett. I have tried building water and heat. Nothing yet. Any recommendations for a barrel vise that will hold the barrel without marring it. My vise with rubber blocks is not doing the trick.

A true barrel vise is the ideal answer but for occasional use, oak blocks in a heavy bench vise will normally work. I take an oak block and drill a hole in it that is slightly smaller than the barrel diameter then saw the block in half through the drilled hole. Some powdered rosin will let the blocks get a good grip on the barrel.

If the wood blocks are not tight, shim with brown paper bag and cornstarch is rumored to do as well as rosin.

If you haven't done so you need to research how to loosen up the Rockset. I don't think there is a vice on the market that will take off a flash hider once the Rockset has permanently set until it gets softened up.

Short action customs has a nice vise. It’s fairly expensive though.
