I would like to start off by apologizing if this has been asked before. I couldn’t find any information related to this. My uncle recently purchased a 1951 Model 99 in .300 and I was wondering if there is anywhere I could check to help him identify what variation of the Model 99 he has? I contacted Cody Firearm Record Office and Savage. Neither one of them could help.

You found the place. There were only three models made in 1951.

The 99EG is by far the most common, and it has a thin forearm with a schnabel tip.
The 99R Version 2 was also made, and has a fat and wide forearm with a rounded end.
The 99RS Version 2 was catalogued, and is the same as the 99R except it has a Redfield 70LH peep sight.

Welcome to the campfire!

Thank you for the welcome and the information! Does any of those versions happen to have any type of inlays in the stock by chance?

No factory version has inlays in the stock.

Yeah. A surprising number show up with aftermarket inlays though. Some are very well done, others... not so well done. grin

I'd be interested in seeing it! I replaced some poor inlay work on a 99 stock once, and liked the way it turned out, but the customer didn't and I ended up buying the rifle from him. Poconojack is absolutely correct, they never came from the factory with any inlays.

Tough to tell.. a 1950's 99R is what it looks like. The white line spacers were added, looks like a recoil pad might have been added (stock probably was cut for it). It has a Williams side mount meaning there's more holes for those screws drilled into the receiver.

That gun probably is a perfect good hunting or range gun.. but it's been altered. Just a heads up in case factory original means a lot to you.

I apologize for the small picture. That's the best I have eek . I don't think it really matters that much to him. He just liked the rifle so he bought it haha. More than likely, it will be a safe queen for him. Thank you all for the information! You have been a tremendous help! Looks like a personalized 99R.

That's a handsome rifle, a well-tended hunting tool, model R or RS (rounded forearm, 24" barrel). The inlay, white line spacers and scope mount, and sling swivels, are all custom additions, non-factory, but they appear to be similar 1951 vintage. The rear aperture sight may have been an original factory extra, standard for the model RS.

Those white diamonds were popular. I passed on a very high condition 250-3000 because it had one, 30 plus years ago.
