Hello
My new midwest deer rifle is a 99 in .358 Winchester.
1.5x6 Leopold

Load
Cci primer
REsized 308 Fedral brass.
200 grn Hornady jacketed round nose
46 grns IMR 4064 powder
2.67 oal

Shoots decent, I think it could shoot better.
1" at 50yds 2 1/2" at 100yds off sandbags.
Minute of deer yes, but I still think it, and I, can do better.
Scope came on gun, has old weaver mounts and rings.
I have a one piece mount with rings I plan on swapping here this summer.

With these midsize cases I usually use INR 4895, but most books call out 4064.
So, powder and grns ?
Always wanted to try Varget for 300 sav, 308, 257 rbts.
Lastly,
I have reloaded for 99,s before, unusually use the books oal for the bullets used,
but with bolt guns I try to get within .02 to .03 of the lands.
With the 99 and its rotary well, this may not be and option.
What in your expirience with 99,s is the best way to seat bullets with any specific cartridge, book oal, or custom oal for every rifle and bullet.
Thanks

I use 40 grains of H4198 and a 200 gr Hornady spire point. What do you think, good load? 2.702" OAL

Shot two touching, adjusted scope.

Shot three into same hole, adjusted scope.

The rifle is a Campfire favorite, the powdercoated 99F with the sewer pipe for a barrel that I chopped with a sawzall. LOL

I load 180 Barnes for the two F’s I have. This bullet shoots well in both. It will blow right through pigs a shoulders

Don't dumb it down. That's more than a Midwest deer stick. That's an grouse to grizzly capable rifle.

Always wanted an 358win but I'd also love an 338 Federal. I'm jealous

I have heard from a member here that the 180 grain Speer hot cor is a good penetrating round.

I never have recalled a load formula making a 2.5 inch shooter into a MOA shooter.

But trigger work , re doing the muzzel crown, barrel relief, and trying different bullets have.

Best of luck.

Good shooting there Fireball!

It's not me. I am just as capable of shooting some bad groups as I am these. It's the rifle and load combined. It's like magic together. Seriously, I'm shooting over the hood of the truck off a bipod. I think this trashed Savage 358 is more a guided missile launcher than a rifle. I mean come on, holes touching, same hole, over and over? Crazy.

It's probably the most accurate rifle I own out of three safes of contestants. In fairness, I haven't fired most of them but how could any do better than that? I'm going to try the same load in a 358 EG when I get around to it, but I don't expect it to do this well. It's just a good combination of load to rifle I suspect.

I have noticed the 358's and 375 Savage 99's shoot better than the smaller bore rifles. All of them I have tried anyway. The 375 I owned for 25 years or so was a one holer. Saddlering/John ended up with that one. I hope he still has it!

As hanco mentioned the 180 Barnes ttsx shoots very well in the 358 carbine I put together. Have only killed one bear with it so far, at 25 yards. Went up in the mountains yesterday in fact and retrieved the skull from that one. It had disappeared but I was able to locate it. Check out that broken tooth! Tough old bear, but he was losing weight when I got him.

I started with Mule Deer's data and ended up with 49.5gr of TAC under a 200 accubond for 2500 fps in an 18.5" barrel. No pressure signs and this gun has a very short throat. It shoots about .75 Moa, it might be better but once I got there I stopped worrying about it.

Good thing about TAC is that it's pretty easy to find, even now.

My 358 Model 99 was good for 1moa with Hornady factory 200gr loads, but I sold it before working up any handloads for it.

I would expect at least MOA from yours. I don't know what you lose by starting at magazine length, close to the lands as possible?

I wonder if you want something faster than Varget?

My .358 is a Browning 81 BLR . It likes a stiff dose of H 4198 and the Speer 180 grain bullet better than anything else I have tried. Great deer load but not anything I'd use if going after anything heavy or dangerous. At anything over 2500 it acts a lot like a varmint bullet , very explosive and rather destructive.

I’m using 46 grains of H-4895 with the 180 Barnes, damn near through the same hole groups in both of my rifles. I was 3 years old when mine were made in 56.

Not a Savage, but lots of .358 Win info.

My current fav load is the 178 Hammer over 46 gr. RL-7.

It’s Iowa’s fault — that was my thinking also. After last spring when the Iowa think tank came up with deer-legal cartridges reg’s, I was momentarily torn asunder between the 50 BMG, the top of their list, and the almost-bottom of it, the 358 Win. The 35’s were where they wisely stopped for deer hunting.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with any of those plebeian 308’s or 270’s or 30-30’s or 243’s; the 7mm-08, the 284 Win, the 257 Roberts, the 6.5’s; any of the 25’s, and others, all of which are so unworthy of deer and dangerous to boot. Safety’s sake you know — cartridges that can carry for many hundreds of yards are too dangerous in Iowa’s woodlots and river bottoms.

Thus I did find peace in the fact that the 358 Norma, the 358 STA , the big 416’s and the like, especially the 50 BMG, can blast along happily for miles. With the right angles, we could measure their reach in fractions of counties.

Iowa’s government working for Iowans. 😉

With the Hornady 200gr. RN I get best accuracy with IMR 3031. It is my go to whitetail load, the one bullet I've recovered so far was perfectly mushroomed and retained 66% of its original weight.
