Canadian Access to Firearms

I know the age demographic here is over 40, and probably over 50. In Canada, for those of you who weren't around before 1979, we got almost all of our firearms information at gun clubs and from magazines. We also congregated at gun shows. In my neck of the woods, we met at the snack area at weekend gun shows to hear the latest from Queen's Park or Ottawa about hunting and firearms legislation. Of course, there was no end to information passing from the guys at the dealer tables!

One of the signs of aging is the unique ability of older people to state the obvious. Things aren't like they used to be. I remember when a box of 22 rimfire ammunition was only 50 cents. I got my first rifle by picking it out of a wooden barrel at the gun shop. Etc. smile

I am hoping not to go down that road with this post. I wanted to talk about Cdn Access to Firearm, a newspaper, that's still being printed on paper. It's been around for almost 40 years. We had a discussion started about this a while back, but it got sidetracked.

There are some links that explain who founded it (Paul Rogan) and why print is still a good way to spread information.

These days, magazines and newspapers like CATF still make sense. For anyone who has sat in a fishing boat or been on a deer hunt, you know what happens when there are no batteries or, heaven forbid, no Internets signal! There is something comforting about reading the latest edition of CATF or your favourite magazine while sitting on the privy or at a campfire. They can be passed around, read, and when it's time to go home, burned. Or, as we did for years, left to be read when we visited again the following year!

Often, it's better to read the smaller ads and not the full page spreads. Things like barrels, stocks, old cartridges and other gems are hidden between the big ads. All these things are listed alphabetically.

And of course, you can finds some topical reading too~! Not all businesses and private sales have an Internets email listing. Some guys have to be contacted the old fashioned way - by phone or at a gun show!

And despite all the drama, there are still a few things scattered around to make you smile.
