Can't find 4350 so for a good replacement for H-4350 or IMR-4350, did a little reading and decided IMR-4831 and i have a plenty, was it Hodgdon web site and Hornady reloading Manual, both put max powder load for IMR 4831, in a 6mm Creed, at 45.0 grs. with a 105 gr. bullet.

Loaded 5 rnds with 42.5 gr. 105 gr. A-Max
5 rnds with 43.0 gr. " "
5 rnds with 43.5 gr ""

Thought i would get close to where i needed to be, and see what kind of groups these loads would show me? then work my up to a Max load, at 100 yrds the 42.5 gr load shot a 7/8" group, the 43.0 load shot a 1/2" group, the 43.5 gr group blew my primer on the 3rd shot, with 1st and 2nd having stiff bolt lift, stopped right there, came back got my Chrno, and Chroned, 43.0 at 3050 fps, from a 20" barrel, Double checked my scales, with my other scales and my scales are on the money, What did i do wrong?? Looking at my handy Iphone Hornady loading app. Max load for Hornady 105 grain A-Max bullets with IMR 4831 is 42.4 gr. Starting load is 36.6 gr.

Even QL thinks you're a little hot, the FPS results are a 100 FPS off but that happens from time to time..

MickinColo, I didn;t look at Hornady web site, but have their new reloading book, and I looked it up on Hodgon, web site both have 45gr. max, load listed.

What you have W/Q loads makes a hell of a lot more sense, in the past all my 6mm Creed loads have been slow, 3000 fps seems little fast for a 20" barrel. Thank You For the info. Rio7

Rio,

The Hodgdon website agrees with your original post.

I’ve had some trouble with their data recently, where the website and their most recent manual conflict in not trivial ways.

In one case, the max load for a 9mm Hornady 147 XTP with CFE pistol is 4.2 grains in the manual, but shows 5.5 grains on the website.

That’s a dangerous difference.

I went with 4.2 based on what they had for other lesser bullet weights.

I’m afraid to think of what 5.5 might have produced.

Rio7,

It seems like Hornady releases a new manual every year for the last 4 years now. If they are adding new bullets, deleting older bullets and adding new cartridges every year, this seems like a opportunity for some major editing screw ups.

MickinColo, This is the first time in many years of reloading I have found poor info, in two locations, not just wrong info but very wrong info. I'm happy i didn't go to Max load first. but then again i never do. Rio7

I was just curious, years ago I had a .243. I would get pressure signs with nosler 100 grain part.s and IMR 4831. I was loading out to just touching the lands, and I couldn't go anywhere near book max.

It was 20 plus years ago, and i haven' owned the gun almost that long. If I remember correctly it was Rem. brass. It was summertime, but summer in NH is not crazy hot.

IMR-4831 fooled me, everyone i talked to said it is comparable to 4350, not in this case, but i should have known the info was wrong, if i compared it to a IMR 4350 load using the same brass and primer and bullet, max load was 42 gr. book max on 4831 said 45 gr. book max was very wrong as has been pointed out, lessons learned--- check double check triple check before going forward with a new load. 4831 is significantly slower than 4350. I still use a of IMR 4831. In my current .243 and .270. Been around a long time, another powder that I use alot is 4064, that's been around a while also.

Funny. I have trusted reloading manuals in the past. Silly me.

I once dumped an ounce and 1/8 of shot into a 4 pound jug of clays powder. I wound up sifting the whole can thru a strainer.

I read the Hornady reloading book, and the Hodgdon, web site both showed the same max load, both were wrong, almost go me in a hell of a fix. and I was 2 grains under their max. Rio7
