I'm look for advice on a hunting pack. I hunt northern Ontario the first week of November each year. The weather is anything and everything. Last year I bought the Sitka fanatic jacket and bibs. They are to warm to wear while walking into the stands usually anywhere from 3/8 to about3/4 of a mile. I generally sit all day so I need something big enough for a couple of sandwiches and drinks plus the Sitka gear. Any ideas of a pack that I can strap the jacket and bibs to the out side.

Evnin, if your into the old style canvas google cooks custom sewing, well made and 1/2 the price of Duluth, or frost. Other wise search some canoe sites or just regular camp supplies. GWP. 👣🐾👣🐾🇨🇦

Have you considered one of the $17 Italian or $18 Polish milsurp canvas packs that Midway is advertising?

It you're just carrying gear to your stand one of these might be worth a look.

Are you packing out meat or just packing in lunch and clothing?

I don't know how large those garments are but maybe you don't need a pack with a belt ... for bulky but light loads, I like a Badlands Pursuit or 5.11 Tactical Rush 24.

If you are also packing meat out, then I'm liking the Eberlestock F1 mainframe and a bag .. their Vapor 2500 would be a good sized choice.

Look at some Badlands day packs, most have some lashing straps on the outside.

Any pack with a load shelf should work quite well. Fold up and place the heavy garments on the shelf, between the bag and frame, and cinch down tight. The previously mentioned Sawtooth 45 will work, but I think you could go a lot smaller, with something like a Pop Up 28. The bag is more than ample for food and water, more spare clothes, binos, kill kit etc.

These are both Mystery Ranch packs, but there are plenty of other packs out there suited for the same purpose.

Eberlestock has a meat hauler that can serve multipurpous. haul clothes in and deer and clothes out.

Kifaru Stryker, load shelf for packing out. Well built and frame is comfortable when hauling.

Budget???

Hunting packs run the gamut of in expensive to just south of $600.

The past 5 seasons I've been using am Eberlestock X2 (about $250) which has decent load carrying capability at plenty of room for a day pack. The suspension is good, but it's not adjustable for torso length. IF anything it's over organized with multiple pockets and is a little heavy for it's capacity, but it's held up very well and carries more chit than I need. It can haul meat if needed, but it won't be too comfortable doing it.





I'm about to switch over to either a Mystery Ranch Pop-Up 38 or a Metcalf for next season. I'm gearing up for a couple elk hunts and packing oput won't be an option, so I need something more capable. My budget will be about $500.

For meat, get a meat pack.

Backpacking or hiking pack sized for the outing. See brands.

Climbing packs. A little lighter for the volume. See brands.

Military surplus packs are sometimes appropriate and durable.

I just bought a Metcalf. My buddy uses one all the time for crazy heavy loads nd he highly recommends it.
