SALT LAKE CITY — Standing in an orange shirt reading "Protect Children Not Guns," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall dove into a list of gun violence statistics and the American cities at the center of recent mass shootings in the U.S.

Uvalde, Texas. Buffalo, New York. Tulsa, Oklahoma.

These instances, which have rattled the nation, prompted Mendenhall to take action in an effort to curb gun violence in Salt Lake City. The mayor announced a new city-sponsored gun buyback program event that will be held on June 11 — the first of its kind since the 1990s.

The first 200 people to turn in their guns will receive a $50 Maverik gift card, according to the mayor.

Community organizer Jeanette Padilla proposed the idea to the Salt Lake City Mayor's Office. The city's idea mirrors a Sacramento, California program held two weeks ago, where 134 guns were exchanged for all the $50 gas cards that the police department had purchased.

"These buyback programs have been successful in other areas of the country in addition to Sacramento," Mendenhall said. "They're a tremendous option for gun owners interested in safely disposing of their unwanted weapons."

Mendenhall said members of her staff and Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown were immediately on board with the plan as soon as it was brought up. The Salt Lake City Police Foundation raised funds to launch the pro

Might be a good location to hang out and perhaps out bid the city on some excellent gear.

I'm wondering:

Will any of the 200 be checked to see if they are Felons Possessing a Firearm?

How many of the 135 guns turned in in Sacramento were actually functional?

Successful in accomplishing WHAT, exactly?

After doing this, was there actually a noticeable, measurable reduction in crime??

What did Sacramento do with the weapons they 'bought'???

Black people are responsible for 55% of murders. The people doing these crimes are like 3% of the population. We would be further ahead if we didn't allow them to own firearms.

Criminals will be robbing homes for guns to turn in now, once they use them for a crime first though.

I have a couple guns that were given to me. They don't work and are not desireable, but I would not sell them for $50.00. I can use them for jack handles or clubs if necessary. Bottom dollar is $150.00. Wonder what kind of guns were turned in for a $50.00 gift card. Cards were probably donated by the business benefited who will have $25.00 profit on each card so no out of pocket expense in the long run. Small people in positions of authority.
