I ordered a new in the white 30.06 barrel to put on an old winchester 1917 action. The threads on the new barrel have the correct tpi but the threads themselves are milled too small. We tried numerous other old damaged barrels and actions and they all interchanged fine. Any ideas? I can obviously return this barrel but if all the new reproductions are threaded this way I just as well find a solution now. If I rethread on what is left of the shoulder will the barrel take the pressure?

From your comments it appears that the tang dia. may be too small. If that is the case the maker no doubt will replace it.

I hope you are correct. I ordered it from numrich so I question if the next barrel will be any different. I guess a phone call is in order. Thanks for the reply.

I was going to ask if it was a numrich barrel.

I just fixed two of these for customers. They sent them out with improper cut threads. If i remember, the groove is too narrow and needs to be widened. Will need to be set up on a lathe and threads adjusted.

They should be 0 050" and they sent them all out at 0 045" or something to that sort. Won't thread onto any action. They also need 5-10 thou cut from the shoulder for headspace and extractor cut done as well.

50 years of doing biz with Numrich, and it is as spotty as buying car parts from a wrecking yard over the phone.

Yup, you're right on the money about the thread cuts. I sent this one back but now Numrich says all the barrels came from the same vendor. I just never learn. Should have chucked this one up. Just thought they needed to make it right. Yeah...

CMP used to carry new criterian barrels for the 17. Don't know if they still do.

For the record....no replacement. Numrich is issuing a refund. Buyer beware of looking for a 1917 barrel from them.

This year I got an "aftermarket" Savage 219 extractor from gun parts corp.

1) No usable machined surfaces on the casting.
2) Big deep voids

I did not even try to use it. I made one from scratch from 4140.

Yup. I still need some other parts but think I'll spend my money elsewhere. A barrel will turn up sooner or later. CMP does list barrels but not sure if I qualify. No work today so I guess I'll look into that. Best of luck to all.
