I inherited weak teeth apparently. Supposedly it doesn't help that I'm a type 1 diabetic also. I had 16 fillngs done one time while awake. It took somewhere around.4 hours. I couldn't stand the sound of a grinder or even walking on packed snow for a while after. I also had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at 14 and have 2 extra that are poking through but not bothering anything. I had a root canal at the beginning of covid that the dentist flugged up that I had to have extracted by another dentist (surgical). Never got reimbursed either. I despise teeth but nobody will pull them and give me dentures like I want because they tell me that my teeth are still too good for it although my bones are receding. I effing hate dental work.

My longtime dentist retired a couple years ago, new dentist want to do $2K work after initial visit which was my last visit. Current dentist didn't find any work necessary, ongoing care with her has been excellent. Some dentists are as interested in your wallet as much as oral health.

40 years?
Hated going to the dentist, forever.

Went through a tough spell, crappy job, no insurances...
Needed 3 root canals and an abscess ground out of my jaw.
Or, pull my front teefths.

Couldn't begin to afford the oral surgeon costs, Frank didn't want
to pull my teeth. He knew I wasn't in a position to decently replace them.

His solution was to do it in house.
3 hours in a chair. Awake.

He ran the numbers, $1200 in 1998.
$1300 if I paid half up front and the rest over 6 months.
Realized at scheduling he hadn't figured the fillings in.
"It'll be ok, just keep those numbers"
Still have those teeth.

Fast forward a few years.
Good job, dental insurance. (Company was self unsured we didn't know it!)
Company got into $$ trouble and was very slow paying our bills.
Doctors and hospitals were coming after the employees, we had payed
our part and the payroll deduction. But you sign that paper of responsibility!

I was in our HR lady's office dealing with yet another threatening letter,
she ask if Frank was my dentist. Then told me how he had called in,
pretty aggravated about the money they owed him. She explained how,
They were behind and paying the bills in the order they accumulated, as fast
as possible. After that, he would call and check, nicely.

And he never, not once, bothered any of the patients for the money the
insurance owed. She had great respect for him.

I miss Frank. The last few years I actually enjoyed going in to see him.
The whole family were HIS patients.

The man called me one evening right before he retired.
He was just personally contacting a number of patients he wanted to
say goodbye to. And my folks, myself and siblings, and our kids were
like family to him. Tears were actually shed.

He retired to Vegas. Hope he loves it there, I hear he actually deals
blackjack part time.

And now, I hate going to the dentist.

Had a very similar experience with my dentist, Broke after the disaster #2 I needed a root canal and crown. He knew my story well and had an ex that was cleaning him out at the time as well, told me to pay him when I could. Took me six months but I squared up with him. We did another deal later, traded him a case of .556 for fixing another busted tooth.

He swears all the time I spent cheek welded to a M1A caused my 2 cracked teeth, both on the rt rear lower jaw. Never had a cavity just the two broken ones.

Started using a mouth guard like the football players, no more busted teeth. That thing was a pain to keep clean on the high power range...

I finally lost the first cracked one a few years ago, it lasted 22 years.

I feel my dentists offer the very best of care. Couple crowns and a couple implants and still have a mouth full of teeth. Can eat anything, but must admit I’ve given up on large sourdough pretzels and any kind of sticky candy. I really like to chew.
My Grandmother used to tell me, “ Teddy take care of your teeth, when they’re gone, they’re gone”.
Always felt that money spent on my teeth was money well spent.

Missing one molar due to cavity/crown/breakage.
Missing 3 lower front - dentist said due to "old trauma" - growing out of my jaw, and needed to be pulled.
"Ever been hit in the mouth?"
"Yeah, even a couple of times by accident."
Thinking, afterwards, a six-weight stag took offense at the remedy, back in my college days, and kicked me square in the mouth.
Amazing they lasted as long as they did.
