My thanks to Damnesia for his empirical data on early first version 250-3000s, circa 1915. Yes my Savage rifle #17255X, like yours is able to shoot 90 grain Sierra Gamekings and the shorter 87 grain bullets but not the Sierra 90 grain BlitzKings which were simple too long and tumbled and keyholed at 50 yards. My THANKS! Incredible knowledge seemingly only found on this forum. (no free bore - no replacement barrel needed!)

Looks like somebody did some very respectable work on an early Model 1920, serial # 1039. Guns International #: 101961008

There is also a newly posted example of an engraved Nieder Mauser Kurz rifle.

Beautiful examples of 250-3000 rifles from another age.

Found a website that shows the bullet lengths to be:
90gr .257 Sierra Gameking - .890"
90gr .257 Sierra Biltzking - 1.071"

Another example of how it comes down to length... Be nice when bullets are easier to find, though with current proposed laws I'm guessing the panic buying will set in for another year or so.

The 39th Model 1920, can't get much earlier than that.

Notice that the tail block isn't d&t for a Lyman #54 and there are 2 non-factory plugged holes on the left side of the receiver, just above the stock line.

Ye Gods and Little Fishes. A Mauser Kurz action, barreled by Niedner, stocked by Shelhamer, and engraved by Kornbrath (but I could do without the engraving). Wish I had $17K laying around, for that would be the ultimate platform for a .250-3000, IMO.

Guns International #: 101961008 Almost makes me want to ask if Stever aka 1899sav has been working on restoring 1920s again.

Jeff, you had one earlier model than that, I recall you saying. I should double checked my records about owning a rough 1920 from BC that passed thorough the YK numbered #1036, IIRC. (new laptop - records on the old Mac)

How does the Nieder appeal to your collector's eye? Makes the custom Rigby 1920 look like a STEAL at the price it sold at.

I found #1016 at a gun show in Leadville, CO, some years ago. It had been, as they say, rode hard and put away wet.

I'm into symmetry, so if I had #1093 I'd be looking for #3901.

If that rifle were in Canada we would be having a different discussion.

I could even live with the cheekpiece if the gun fit me as well a shotgun. The walnut, checkering, and sights are all pleasing to my eye. cool
