First off, I'm a big fan of accubonds, as such, am used to their performance on game.

So now your asking...wtf is this dude asking about SSTs ?

Well, I have a 270wsm that shoots the 140SSTs into sub .5" cloverliefs, in the mid 3100s., using 7828ssc.

Now for my problem....after the fact, i got ahold of 140abs, and I started working up a 140ab load for my 270wsm, and been around an inchish+. But, in the meantime, I managed to rupture my Achilles in my rt foot, so load development has come to a crashing halt during my recovery from surgery.

I've been reading about the SSTs on various forums, mostly older posts from 10ish years ago, and on game performance appears to be not so great.

Question, have they been improved Ala some of the bt have ?

I bought the box of the 140sst at my local Cabelas, as that's all they currently had in stock, so they are the newest mfg.

Oddly enough, this has been discussed recently on some threads here. Hornady fixed the problem with early SSTs quickly, and today they perform very much like Hornady Interlocks.

I've killed a truck load of deer and one elk with them. Nothing but good to say about terminal performance.

The SSTs are really accurate in my 270wsm, was hoping to hear they wold hold together well.

Hornady seems to rate the following bullets as suitable in 7MM x 139 grains, for larger game like elk > Interlock, GMX, SST, CX, and ELD-X. Any that may be marginal out to say 400 yards at typical 7-08 or 7x57 speeds?

I have personally killed lots of deer and pigs with that bullet, 140 SSTs in .277. They are def way splashier than interlocks. Big cone shaped path of destruction in and out, about the diameter of your fist, tons of frag throughout, impact velocities 2700-2800 fps. The 140's penetrate better than the 130's do. It's a good bullet, very destructive, you won't catch one broadside in a deer but expect lots of frag. I can't imagine anyone who has used that bullet saying that they "hold together well" but they have enough sectional density to get through a whitetail and should give reliable expansion at lower velocities than other bullets.

I'm used to accubond and partitions performance. 2 holes, Stevie Wonder blood trails.

Places I hunt tend to be thick, I like 2 holes, makes follow-up easy.

Since I probably won't have a lot of time to fudge with the 140ab, I'm going to run the 140sst in my 270wsm this season. Load development on the ssts is done, very happy with the Velocity and accuracy I am getting.

I'll post back this fall if I take something with that combo.

I'm sure the SST will drop them quick, but I have lotsa experience with Nosler ABs, and its hard to find a better all-round bullet. I'd also be very careful of my shot and where the SST hits.

I’ve killed literally hundreds of whitetails with the 150gr SST in a 30-06 running about 3100fps, and I would think the 140/.270 version would be just as good or better. They are fantastic killers on deer, if not a little messy at times. I would estimate that I had pass through about 80% of the time and almost always on broadside shots. When they didn’t pass through, it was usually DRT. In fact, I would estimate that I had at least 60% DRT, maybe more.

I probably would not use them on elk or other heavy game as a first choice……
