Best one I ever had was made from a circular saw blade, if you have any interest in DIY. I made mine in the pattern that allows your fingers to go thru a cutout under the handle, for less fatigue. I finish ground mine to a single bevel like the ones in NW AK. In practical use, a radius cutting board or heavy wooden bowl is almost as important as the tool itself. There are a bazillion ulus on ebay, but I think you can make a better one.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I have often thought about making an ulu, but never found a pattern I really liked or
felt like making.
Don't really know that I actually have a use for one, but......

Maynard Linder, Homer Alaska.

He makes some neat ones out of old saw blades with hands from caribou antler, stellar sea cow, fossilized ivory, etc. Also makes some neat knives as well! I have one of his Fish River design ulus w/ a caribou antler handle. I use it all the time and really enjoy it! I also purchased one of his fillet knives and hope to use it this summer.

He used to have an eBay store. Not sure if that is still up or not. A place out of Ketchikan sells some of his stuff as well... that is where I bought mine. Fish Creek Trading Post or something like that. Google Dancing Man Knives and you will find it!

I have a knives of Alaska one the is okay. I have a cheap one my wife bought and cut herself every time she used it,so she gave it to me I have cut up many squirrels and rabbits and chickens and other small game with . It is my go to knife for that kind of work. I have a "mini Ulu" that I carry as a neck knife that handy but it is not a true Ulu because it is not chisel ground

I have made a few from OLD handsaw blades. Old ones
really throw sparks when hit with a grinder or dremel tool
Axis handles. Some of the guys use them to chop up salsa.

Chip from the Alaska show. Pretty sure his family makes them the old fashioned was. Someone here should know his Campfire handle.

Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

Hacksaw or circular saw?

Have three western versions with cutouts beneath the handle. Sharp sob's but haven't given them much use. Will pick up an eastern version (handle with single post beneath) if I run across one.
