In this month's issue of the American Rifleman Joe Coogan has written a very interesting article on the development of this caliber. I'm not into big bore double guns myself but I still found this to be a great read.

I’ll need to read that. I’m getting soft in my old age. I doubt I’d like the recoil much. Especially since my biggest game in the future would not require such a bruiser.

I prefer classic.

I feel the same way. I don't need that much power and I definitely would not want to fire one of those but I still find it to be a very interesting cartridge.

At least reading the article won't bruse your shoulder.

The article was indeed interesting - rather uncommon for the American Rifleman.

That guy must of inherited a lot of money!

Several years back Buckstix chronicled his journey of having a 700 NE double made for himself. In addition, I believe he machined his own brass and bullets?

"... amassed more than 10,000 Nitro Express cartridges."

ok, just spit balling here and doin' some rounding... 10,000 NE cartridges @ around $200 /box today ... $100,000

Not too shabby cool

He sold them to collectors for $100 per cartridge.
At that rate, 10,000 cartridges is a million bucks.
They sold out pretty quickly.

The redneck approach would have been
12 Gauge from Hell 3.85", bigger, more powerful.
1400-gr Darwin Slug at mere 1800 fps taught me a lesson in a single barrel.
IIRC that was with only 180 gr of RL-17, with filler !

The buyer REALLY wanted that .700! Lots of miscellaneous costs involved.

I would gladly watch someone else shoot it. 😁

Normally 18-20 lb rifle lol. Just carrying the damn thing would be a chore. Great read though and would love to have a chance to fire one someday

I found it amusing how the guy who designed and ordered the 700 NE made multiple reference to H&H staff disrespecting Americans. He being the only American in the room. I agree it was stupid for H&H to build the last 600H&H with an agree not to make any more. They must have neeed the money? I think, I read that buyer was an American. You see a pattern yet? So this guy took a prototype 700 rifle to Africa and killed an elephant with a heart shot. That is easily done with a 375H&H an AFAIK even a 30-06 220 FMJ will make heart shots on elephant. Maybe now, we see a pattern here? I read something like a dozen more 700's have been sold by H&H. I bet they were sold to American's. Do we finally see a pattern here?

I am all for fantasy guns. But a fantasy should not be a national embarrassment.

Fourbore,

Irony is the highest form of humor.
Hilarious, your post.
A proposed load for the deep pockets victim of bore envy:
.700 NE 3.5" with 1000-grainer in 24" barrel: 190.0 gr. RL-17 >>> 2068 fps MV
Only 77% LR/net fill, use foam wad filler, or Dacron if you like a snow storm.

Can't afford a .700 NE H&H Royal double rifle?
Use some duct tape around the forearms and butts of a pair of break-open singles.
RL-17 ignites readily with a 209 shotgun primer, no hangfire worries.
Turned brass cases are available in both 3.5" or 3.85" lengths for either
.730 NE 3.5" or .730 NE 3.85":

[Linked Image]

Bare rifles (with scope base only) each weigh 10.25 lbs, including iron rod or mercury tubes in butt stocks.
Muzzle brake and golf ball launcher each add a pound of weight, interchangeable between rifles.
Also add weight of scope and rings.
Also add weight of slip-on butt pad and sling, if desired.

20 ga From Purgatory 3.5" (aka .615 NE 3.5") is at extreme left above, with 920-gr flat base slug, mould also by Steve Brooks.
Rest are various 12 ga 3.5" to 3.85", including one of the 3.85" cases made from a 50 BMG case with 12 ga rim screwed onto it,
made by Nobozo, Ltd.
My rifles work only with the turned brass from RMC.

For the recoil curious wishing to work up gradually,
a 1400-gr slug at 1400 fps is easy with 3.5" plastic hulls in a
24"-barreled Mossberg 835 Ultimag.
Lead shot and epoxy fills the butt of the thumbhole stock for 14-pound bare weight of shotgun without scope.

[Linked Image]

With the standard pistol grip stock and no lead fill, weight is about 6 pounds lighter. Ouch.

Sure was, but not the laughing matter kind of fun that the .300 WBY video linked by jwp475 was.
ROTFLMAO

A 20 Ga 2.5" rifle on a Remington rolling Block is more to my liking nowadays.
That would be the .615 Nitro Express 2.5".

One of the most interesting articles I've read in a long time.
