This morning. Couldn’t help but remember this story I wish to share;

And yet it irks me the poor dappled fools,
Being native burghers of this desert city,
Should in their own confines with forked heads
Have their round haunches gored."

Thanks for posting that Kaywoodie! I’ve put down lots of tracks around the Davis mountains and always wanted to glass up a bear but hadn’t yet. I do t see how they could just make a subspecies on an animal that has such a big home range, but I guess that was their excuse to keep it. Sonsabeaches!

Here’s more of the story I found on the interweb. Still an interesting read. A bit more detail. Trying to find out what rifles they used. Somewhere I seem to remember reading they were just ol’ 94’s in .30 WCF. But I do not know for sure.

Thank you so much kaywoodie for posting this as I really enjoyed the history! As a matter of fact, it has prompted me to start planning a trip to the Davis Mountains come October, if I can afford the gas, as it's only a 12 hour drive down I-20.

Another favorite story! If you look at the first photo, you will see the “two” different model 1895 winchesters 😉. Just another great story.

The wife has cousins that live down there.

Her folks have been around that part for a long time.

They run a b&b down there somewhere.

I'm having a hard time making Pigg's rifle a '95 Winchester, looks more like a bolt action. Thoughts?
Anyway, I'm really enjoying these articles, thanks for posting!

It’s a Winchester Lee straight pull.

Very cool stories KW. As the legend goes my Great Grandad killed the last bear around these parts back in 1919. Shot him out of a tree when they spotted him by their picnic spot.

I knew the magazine shape was familiar but, the pic was too dark to get a good look. Thanks Kid!

LOL! Thats why I said in my comment about the "two" different model 1895’s. Guess I should have worded it as the "other" 1895. 😉

Glad y’all have enjoyed reading them!

Mr. Pigg was ahead of the curve for hunters of the era with his .236, the Creedmoor of the time. wink I'd rather the .30 U.S. for bear. whistle

The .30 US Army loaded with 220 grain RN projectile is my all time favorite cartridge.
