I had a client of mine tell me his brother was liquidating his gun collection and that one of those guns belonged to my Grandfather at one point. He sold the gun to his brother in the late 60's and it was hunted for a few years then apparently stuck in a case to sit. It's what you would call a grey rat, not surprising. Metal has some surface rust but no pitting, the problem is the tang has a huge crack. Set aside the history and it's connection to my family , what would you pay for a rifle in this condition? It's year of production based on the serial number is 1950. I have a few 99's but am no expert in the area like you gents.

Notwithstanding it's a family gun (how can anybody but you set a price on that?) the best return on investment there is parted out IMO...

I'd like to call that a break at the wrist rather than a crack at the tang. Couple sellers and I have had deep discussions defining the difference. The wood stocks have also been sanded and the condition of the metal on the receiver is rough or "grey" as has been said. The metal on action I suspect belies the state of the metal on the entirety of the rest of the rifle The screws will tell you the whole story regarding the history of the firearm. The price is subject to the budget and eye of the beholder. YMMV I paid five bills for an 1950s "F" with the same mounts, in a similar state, also scoped but in Canada. It doesn't belong to my family, friends, or client - so again "Your Milage May Vary."

I gave him an offer today for what I thought was fair, I think he wanted north of 1k and I would be prepared to offer if the rifle was in at least good condition. Thanks for the input gents.

Go buy a nice Savage lever like granddad's and start a new piece of family history.

I have my father's 99 that is actually now my middle son's. My oldest was gifted a 99 on his 1st birthday by my father and I have a 308 E. I idolized my grandfather and spent as much time as I could with him before he passed. I would love to have a hunting rifle that he carried but I also don't think the old man would want me to overpay for a rifle in that condition just because he had it for awhile. The owner is considering my offer, either way I'm glad I got to see it for a little while.

If he is asking 1000 for that rifle he might have it for a while.
I can't imagine somebody that doesn't have a family tie to that gun paying more than $500 for a broken rifle. Scope is worth 50. Maybe

What a dick. If I was in possession of that rifle, I’d cut an heir a real steal of a deal.

I agree, I would tell him to pound sand and then seek out another in remembrance to GrandDad.
