Not uncommon to run into bears upclose but a large number of "incidents" seem to involve earbuds...

I believe you Sitka, but Why in the Fuqk would people wear ear buds out hiking? Dumb bastards. Are they that addicted to social media?

There are too many dangers out there, rattlesnakes for one and of course bears.

I have a set of apple AirPods, they ain’t cheap. I only use them while sitting in my chair, i don’t want to loose them.

Yep…..here too! Our “lap dogs” are fattening-up for winter hibernation! 😉 memtb

They're not only a hazard in the boonies. In downtown Denver we have commuter trains on the street level. When I worked down there, once or twice a year you'd hear about pedestrians getting hit by a train, and earbuds/earphones were usually involved.

smokepole;
Good afternoon my cyber friend, I hope the day down in your section of Colorado is behaving itself for the last day of June and you're well.

When our girls were younger I used to get quite firm about paying attention or situational awareness both in the larger urban centers as well as out in the mountains.

Thank goodness that seems to have stuck with them, but the lack of situational awareness some people, including cyclists wearing ear buds is really something isn't it?

In Toronto a couple of Januarys back the city put out a big bulletin pleading with pedestrians to take out their ear buds and consider wearing a toque instead of having a hoodie pulled up to block all peripheral vision after the 17th pedestrian that month died walking out in front of a vehicle while doing both. I might be wrong in that it was "just" 17 struck because they'd blindly walked in front of them, but I do think it was killed and then more were struck.

One supposes that if we need to tell people not to eat Tide Pods we'll also need to tell them to pull out their ear buds and maybe look around at least once in awhile?

We live in an area where there are a few grizzlies though they seem to be increasing since the season was stopped for what the government admitted was purely political reasons. Anyways all that to say that it could happen my ticket gets punched this fall or later this summer out scouting on the mountain behind the house, but it will not be because I had earbuds in, that's for sure and certain.

All the best and Happy Fourth of July.

Dwayne

LOL, I hadn't made the connection, but I think you're onto something. As a young kid, we lived right next to a busy road. If I got anywhere near the traffic, I'd have two or three adults and one or two of my older brothers hollering at me to get back away from the road, that was kind of drilled into my head.

So it boggles my mind when I'm in my truck approaching a crosswalk and I see just about every pedestrian in the crosswalk staring down at their phone, enthralled. They don't even look up to see if I'm slowing down, it's amazing.

From the look of the tracks in the snow it was a good sized bear and any big boar has been hunting and killing elk calves all spring.

That bear might have seen him from a distance and charged thinking he was normal food until contact.

I had friends get charged from over 100yds and kill the bear @ 20yds.

With the wind in that area bear spray would be pretty useless most of the time and, as you know, there are no trees to climb. On the ground without a gun he would have been at the mercy of a grizzlies mood.

Caught this one on the Jack Creek road below 4 Bear oilfield.

This is not far from the attack for those that don't know the area like Ralphie.

IIRC, the teacher that got killed by wolves on the AK Pen a few years ago, was running with ear buds.

Thanks, I was debating photoshopping myself into that picture riding the bear just to jazz it up a bit.

He was down low hunting elk calves.

Umm…..generally you don’t get enough cell service in grizz country to be on social media, and even if you did, there’s a 100% chance he was listening to music or a podcast. Dumb bastard.

We get 2-3 grizz attacks per year here in island park. I used to bow hunt it all the time and almost lost a hunting partner to an attack. Now that I have kids I don't bow hunt it as much. It is crazy full of griz and they have no fear. I can't believe I used to hint it without a gun on my side. I don't even pick berries there now without my 329pd.

My spelling is terrible, so I rely on the app. I see your point, though, clearly! 🤣
