Based on JB's oft reported statement that recent Hornady SSTs have terminal performance very similar to their Interlocks, I tried some 139 SSTs in my 280. MV is about 2950 fps. The load is quite accurate and terminal performance on 8 0r 9 whitetails has been very good.
About a year ago I purchased a couple of boxes of 7MM 130gr factory seonds from Midway that are visually identical to the SSTs. Although the brand is not identified, I'm pretty dang sure they are SSTs.
So my question is this: Is there any way to determine if these factory seconds are "recently" manufactured, I.e., since Hornady toughened them up. Or would it be more likely that they could be some of the early SSTs that were pretty fragile?
Pretty sure the answer is that the only way to tell is to try them out. But I thought there is nothing to lose by asking the question.
Thanks for any intel...

The SST bullets came out about.15 years ago. I sincerely doubt that any Seconds purchased from Midway during the past few years would be of any early run of SST bullets simply due to both Hornady's and Midway's relatively fast inventory turnover.
If those slugs were in some dusty old box or bag or bag you bought from some small out of the way Gun shop ,I could believe it was possible. But not from Midway.
One way you can see for sure is section a bullet and see how thick the jackets are.
Frankly, unless you are going to slap them on shoulders at close ranges or take raking shots , even the early SSTs would be fine for lung shots.

I bought seconds 2 years ago, from the pawn shop in Grand Island that carries all of Hornadys seconds. A 115gr 25 cal SST went in the brisket and out the arse of an antelope at 300+ yards. I would say penetration was NOT an issue. Expansion appeared fine as the exit would was fist sized.

Were the 139 SST bullets some that needed toughened up or were they fine?
Not all of em needed "toughened".
Edited, you could send em to me and I could give a whirl on pigs, coyotes, deer or whatever else crosses my path.

SST, light for caliber or medium for caliber, limit your shots for rear lung shots, you will do very well.

I got 162 gr SST 7mm blem bullets from Lock Stock and Barrel for 6.7 cents per bullet.
In 2010 I dropped a mule doe, bang flop, at 400 yards with one of these bullets.
No complaints... worked like a nosler ballistic tip.
