It never pierces CCI, Federal or Winchester. Piercing will eventually erode your firing pin and dirties the breech area pretty good.

Never used 'em, but Brownell's has 'em in stock.

They work. And YMMV regarding pierced Cheddite primers. I have read reviews that they are dimensionally different than USA made 209s. But my experience is that they seat as well as any other 209. They're plenty hot.

My Traditions has a 209 breech plug and firing pin. And a musket cap breech plug and firing pin. I found the musket cap firing pin set off the Cheddites reliably and didn't pierce them. Not an ideal solution. But it worked.

I handload so I already have primers and priming tool. Ordered the adapter bushings and the plug and I've been lighting BH209 with CCI 250 large rifle magnums. If you don't handload, a lee hand primer isn't terribly expensive. I think they are much more consistent and cleaner than 209s. I've shot them in pretty cold Temps without issue.

My encore has the QLA and it is a hammer with most things I've shot...including full bore Thors.

Where did you get the adapter bushings? I had a T/C Impact breach plug machined for the variflame adapter, have the adapters, needing the bushings...

Here's my experience with Cheddites:

Left: hit with a firing pin (all pierced)
Middle: hit with a musket cap pin
Right: musket caps

They also bulge when hit with a firing pin. Sometimes to the point that there's quite a bit more resistance to opening the action than with fired Federal 209s.

Left: Federal 209MZ
Middle: Federal 209A
Right: Cheditte
(all with with the same firing pin)

Googling Cheddite primers does show this is a pretty consistent complaint among shot shell reloaders, too. The cups seems very soft on Cheddites.

Can't remember exactly where I ordered mine. I should probably order 20 or 30 more just to have on hand. Easy enough to loose.

Cheddite primers are a bit softer....I use Cheddite hulls in the 20ga Encore TSS turkey loads. They work. But I Pierce them. My heavier than normal hammer spring doesn't help.

Guess I used the wrong terminology. Is there a bushing that fits on the adapter when you put it in the breach plug? Adapter is loose in the breach plug on its own.

tomme boy, sent you a PM, thank you!

Those are 777 primers, no good for BH209. Probably work for everything else since caps do.

I have more 209's here than I can say Grace over! Winchester I think. I will not ship them, however if your in the 979 area code of Texas and need some, message me here. If you only need a hundred or so, they are free.

I got all excited last fall when I inquired at my LGS and they said they had 209 primers. However, what they did, was open a 100 pack, and out 20 in a zip lock bag. That was the limit per customer. Oh, 20 cost as much as 100 did pre pandemic.

Hello Dcl,

I'm about an hour east of you. Won't be able to PM you and hesitant to provide personal contact info on an open forum. Really appreciate the offer.

I'm seeing plenty of muzzleloader 209s for sale, packs of 100, for obscene prices. Saw some Remingtons for $22.95, and other brands down to $15.99 for a pack of 100. Pretty bad when you are paying double the price, or more, for an underpowered 209 than for full power 209s. I picked up a box of 1000 Federal 209As a couple of months ago for around $75.00.

Local WM has the federal 209mz for $7 or $8, they just got their ML stuff in for the year.
