Looks like the scope is turned 90deg. Wonder why?

I saw that and wondered why. Aren't certain scopes available with the windage turret on the left side?

There may be scopes like that, but I'm not familiar with them. This scope is clearly turned and I have to wonder if this is to eliminate an ejection problem by moving the turret out of the way of exiting brass.

I wouldn’t change a thing, nothing except the scope and mounts.

Mike Connor was a very good stockmaker. You will be hard pressed to find someone to make something that is an improvement.

The barrel is a Douglas Fwt so is relatively easy to replace with another if you want a 284 based cartridge. You are likely to have feeding issues if you attempt to change it to a 7x57 dimensioned cartridge. Besides there are good sources for 284 and 6.5-284 brass.

Don’t eff it up.

Maybe it didn't eject correctly so it was turned so the brass would clear the turret?

Wonder what’s the twist?

Does the 6-284 have a std SAAMI twist? That one’s probably custom, so who knows. I’d hope it was an 8 twist.

Considering when the rifle was assembled I bet it is a 1-10. In those days the 6 Rem had the fastest twist which was either 9.5 or 9.75.
I don’t think Douglas made anything faster than 10.

SAAMI shows chamber specs, didn’t see a specified ROT like the Creed.

10 better than slower, but 8 would to me seem about right.

Hornady gives load data for their 105’s, stating 10 twist won’t stabilize it.

For my use, I’d probably rebarrel to an 8 twist 6-284 or 6.5-284. If one had a .284 itch, the patent .284 round is a good one.

There could be some major issues, converting an action modified for the .284, back to a std round.

The 6mm Remington had a 1-9 twist from the get-go, since Remington wanted to get well beyond the 1-12 debacle.

In fact Remington switched to 1-9 twists in their .243 Winchester rifles at the same time, rather than have to button-rifle two different twists for the two cartridges. I know this because my first .243 Winchester was a Remington 700 BDL, purchased slightly used in 1974, which had a 1-9 twist....

I guess it depends on how much work was done on the action to accommodate the fatter .284 case.

Often working on the mag follower, maybe a wider box mag and feed ramp tweaking will be sufficient for the .284 family of rounds. Now, if they messed with the rails, that’s different. So, going back from wide .284 cases to conventional sized cases may or may not be a problem. A good smith can make it work regardless. Just a function of time and cost.
