Quite simply, it’s the homesteader mentality coupled with Blake’s Law:

The longer you need something for some possible future use, the sooner you will need it after discarding it.

If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

It starts as good intentions and turns into an expense that they can't afford to get rid of....usually.

I sure could go for some $2.50/gal gas and a mean tweet!

Those people in Rock Chuck's post and pictures would make great neighbors! Just imagine going over to their house and say, "Hi, Mr. Jones. I was wondering if I could borrow a cup of sugar?"

"Why sure, son. Sugar? Let's see now. Where did I put that last 50 pound bag I bought? Son, I'll have to look for it so it might be a while. There's a chair over there. Have a seat. Oh, while I'm looking, would you like a glass of lemonade?" grin

I remember that show called Hoarders. Had to quit watching it because it would gross me out. I remember an old.lady hoarding her dirty adult diapers. Another with an old wheelchair bound man that would piss and moan about everything that the crew was throwing away. Got mad when they were tossing out an old frying pan that was rusted through because he said "Haven't you ever seen where people paint pictures on them and hang them on the wall?" The people looked like they wanted to bash him with that pan. Stupid, unreasonable idiots.

A lot of folks that hoard have mental issues, sometimes from a very poor childhood where they didn't have anything of their own. Others do it after a traumatic episode like a death. No matter what the reason, it makes no sense if 90% of the stuff is useless. I know of a couple people that started out as small time "preppers" and have slowly turned into hoarders. Most of the stuff they have is buried under other junk, and is useless due to that very problem. One person needed a generator a while back and couldn't dig it out of their garage to use it. I thought it might dawn on them how dumb that is, but it didn't slow them down.

I don't understand it either, I am the exact opposite. That said, it's thier property. If they wanna stack it full of hot tubs. Well good for them I guess, none of my business. It will only inconvenience my eyes for a few seconds as I go by.

Used to look like that on my in-law’s land. They ‘let’ me clean it out

I spent about 5 weekends, just weekends hauling junk cars, a barn 4 ft deep of engine blocks and transmissions. Lawn tractors, mowers, satellite dishes, wash machines, odd junk.

Had to do it in winter because the copperheads are so bad on that piece. Some cars didnt have wheels. Jacked them up on cribbing and eased the trailer up under halfway, lower it and winch up the rest of the way on sandy trailer deck and a come a long.

Cars were paying $180 a ton.

Made about 8-9k for all of that junk.

I pulled the 383 HP out of 69 Fury VIP up in the weeds. That motor is now in my 72 Challenger. I tore it down, honed the cylinder walls and put new TRW 10:1 pistons in it, 284/484 purple shaft cam and lifter kit, already had 906 heads so just valve job, fresh keepers, springs and seals.
