Just picked up a 416 Rem at a lgs. It was a price that I couldn’t pass up. From my understanding it was a custom shop ordered rem 700 with a McMillan stock, muzzle brake, express sights and removable front sight hood cover. I added the 1.5-5 Leupold. Sits at 10lbs 6oz.

Got some components to make some ammo. Not much need now, but hopefully it will be used for a dugga boy in a few years.

One thing is that it “doesn’t have the look” with the stock mounted sling stud mount instead of a barrel band sling stud. I’ve got some Barnes tsx bullets, but looking for some cheaper rounds to load up just to see how it feels. My 375 h h weighs 7lb 14oz. Scoped. Thumper but manageable with 260 accubonds traveling 2650.

Should I have a barrel mount sling stud welded on like the 375? Won’t be a band because of the possible amount of work. I purchased this for under 1k and don’t want to spend where it’s not needed. Probably carry it African style when I do go.

Does anyone else wonder where we would be today if Winchester decided to introduce rounds like the 458 Lott and 416 Rem back when they did their 458?

Have a look at the 458 Win Mag thread and you will understand both are unnecessary with a M70 receiver.

Nice "come up". Go forth and smash.

Apparently, Winchester did not get that memo as they are currently offering the M70 in 416 Rem. I feel the big 40's as a group are the best balance for dishing out the appropriate level of punishment at both ends of the stick. That is just my 2c, obviously many draw the line elsewhere. In fact I like the bigger stuff. Liking does not equate to being more effective in my hands.

The OP asked about the sling stud. I hold the stock far enough back that never been a problem for me. As for cosmetic, I dont think that matters. If I had the budget to make changes- I would chop off the brake on the 416 and cut the 375 back to 22". Not that you care what I would do. Well, maybe? You did ask.

Once one carries a barrel banded sling swiveled rifle there is no going back. It hangs right, carries right, and is there for quick use. As for the action length, a New Haven M70 allows one to use the receiver length to advantage such that were we here 35 years ago having this discussion, the 416 RM would never have been whelped and the 458 Lott would be a non issue.

If we are sincere about function rather than fashion, there is a perfectly serviceable stud that clamps on the barrel. I dont know who makes it, perhaps Uncle Mickie?

Grovtec. Their largest diameter.900” would fit this barrel perfectly. I may try that first. But probably get the non band sling stud mount welded/soldered on like my 375.

Great looking rifle and scope package. Makes me want to go home and drag out my Sako .416 with brake and recoil pad by Answer Products and lauch some Barnes bullets after work.

Sounds like you got a great buy on a very useful DGR. Agree that carrying over shoulder muzzle forward makes the whole barrel band discussion moot.

If it bothers you take the front sling swivel off and be done. I know a PH whose 458 Win Mag has no sling swivels front or back. Works out just fine.

Just heard from the PH I hunt with. The hunter who followed me shot a nice mature elephant bull with a 416 Rem Mag. These heavy mediums work well in that role with the right monolithic solids.

The barrel swivel stud base is usually silver soldered on instead of welded. That avoids the risk of affecting heat or cryo treatment to the barrel that might impact the bore.

BTW you might also consider Swift 400 grain AFs. They work well for buffalo, in my limited experience.

10 lbs 6 oz make a heavy medium very comfortable to shoot and easier for follow ups.

When I took my 416 Rem (Win M70) to Africa I never used a sling.

I stopped using a sling as well.

Muzzle forward over the shoulder carry works much better in relatively open terrain typical of much of Zim and RSA. Saves luggage weight as well, especially when more than one heavy medium DGR is on the itinerary.

A sling is weight you care about on an airline and/or in the field?

A sling is something I do not want to hinder me getting off a shot. Something I found I did not need. Zero to do with weight.
