At the end of their commitments in 2024. They're looking at building their own station. The station was originally designed to last until 2028. It's unknown how this will affect ongoing programs and research. SPACE STATION

The difficulty will be with the Russian modules. Only they know exactly how the systems work, and those systems are critical to the rest of the ISS. Plus, there'll be no replacement parts when something breaks.

It's a serious issue.

Biden's in outer space. He'll fix it.

Did nobody think this could happen? Are there no contingencies in place for such events?

It’s hard to have sympathy for NASA if they, of all people, didn’t have a plan in place for the absence of Russian participation.

Strategic maneuver on Russia's part. There has been several mentions the last couple years that the ISS is failing and won't last another two years. Systems are starting to break down and other issues have made it "less than safe" to live aboard the station the last couple years. I saw an article a few months ago that said the ISS has been hit by debris from other satellites in orbit that have died or been used by the Chinese and Russians as target practice for their anti satellite weapons testing, causing some damage but not mention of how substantial.

I would be surprised if NASA isn't working on a new space station as we speak...

I think they need to concentrate more on Artemis anyway.

The thing is an antique. Let Elon and SpaceX build a new one and drive it up there in the trunk of a Tesla.

The Space Station has outlived its usefulness. It's an excuse for begging grant money for some nonsensical projects. Some bio research has profited from being done in space, but it can be done on other spacecraft.

As usual, the USA gets to foot the bill to keep this "toy" operational.

"Before the ISS There Was Space Station Freedom"

Politics, contractors, government budgets, etc. ... The end result? An unneeded, comprised boondoggle of a space station.

After the Apollo program, the manned missions part of NASA was left looking for a reason to exist.

In contrast, unmanned missions for exploration/scientific purposes have been very successful.

Maybe we need our own space station. Anything tagged international usually means the US pays for it and every other country uses it.
