Looking for a side by side UTV with a bed. Was looking at Gravely today and impressed. Anyone have experience with them?

$18k is so close to a Polaris and Honda, I'd hold out for resale and parts availability.

The website says they are a division of AriensCo, with 3 plants in the U.S. and one in U.K.. Is Gravely built overseas?

@jameslavish

If you work 40 hrs/wk: at 5% inflation and after 5 years, you need a 28% pay raise or to work 44 more hours (*one full extra week* per month+) to make up the difference.

This is inflation

Most parts are from Polaris so that makes it easier for repairs.

Gravely used to be a respected name in pro-level lawn mowers. That was back in the dark ages. I grew up next to one of the Crosley family. They owned the Cincinnati Reds at the time. I seem to remember the Reds using Gravely equipment at Crosley Field. Lou was running a Gravely mower for his yard and had Gravely machines for his 1-acre vegetable garden. Outside of golf courses, I never saw another Gravely, and what I saw was made in the 1950's. They had a reputation for being tanks.

I suspect somebody bought the name.

Before I bought a Gravely, I'd look seriously at a Hoyt-Clagwell. There's a distributor over by Pixley.

I used to use Gravelys. they always worked and took a beating. Easy to maintain too. I haven heard the name in years... But then i haven't used a walk behind in decades. Scag was the competition back then. You could get a scag with a little third wheel behind it that lazy people could stand on. It was fine for level fields but you had no leverage if you needed to crosscut a hill.

I used to be a mechanic and later salesman at a dealership that sold Gravely/Ariens. Gravely makes a helluva commercial mower. However, they are not a maker of UTVs and it seems they want to put their name on one so they appear to offer the "full line". Just buy Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Polaris. You'll thank yourself in the end.

Kawasaki or Polaris. If dependability is important to you.

Some of the Kawasaki units come with a factory 3yr warranty. Many others come with 1yr. Says something.

As noted Gravely makes great lawn mowers.

It’s probably a deal like when a respected company like Carhartt or Duluth decides to sell a boot. They have no boot making experience. They have no boot making facilities. So, they get the cheapest [bleep] they can made in China, slap their name on it, and sell a $50 boot for $200 because of the name.

That said, some of the Chinese made UTVs have really good reviews and appear to be well made. But you should probably know exactly what you are getting into and buy one of those with your eyes wide open if you choose to go that way.

Gravely is owned by Ariens Co. (Brillion WI).
Polaris builds Gravely UTV's for Ariens Co.

If you're buying, buy from a company that builds ATV's, not just distributes them.

Well, then. That would appear to be a different deal.

The main problem with buying one from a company that sells them as a side business, is long term availability of parts. My buddy bought a John Deere and after only a couple years they were out of certain problem parts. He got rid of it quick. Buy a Honda or Yamaha.
