They were a good idea. They work, and make a single shot 12 or 16 into a workable kid trainer.
Was Mike Armstrong. Got logged off; couldn't log back on. RE-registered my old call sign, Mesa. FNG. Again. Mike Armstrong

I have two for each gauge all in original boxes. I used one to teach each of my children to shoot starting when they too small to hold the old 12 gauge break-action so they each sat on my lap while I helped support the gun. That was in the 60's.

They made them in 20 gauge as well. Just don’t break the ejector.

I was often intrigued by the concept of sub-gauge barrel inserts but never pursued them. When/where was the idea introduced? I doubt it was Savage's idea because I vaguely remember reading of them being used in either Germany or England a bazillion years ago.
I tried out other guys 28, &.410 tube inserts in their sleek 12 gauge doubles and O/U's on the skeet field (they're made by a couple reputable firms) and the consensus was they turned finely balanced guns into something less so. The simpler chamber inserts on the other hand seemed better in that regard but scores mysteriously dropped a bit and we figured it was from degraded shot patterns brought about from the sub-gauge wads not sealing the 12 gauge bores.

Browning offered sets of sub-gauge tubes so that you could shoot all gauge skeet with your 12ga.. There was also a company named Purbaugh that made sub-gauge tubes that were popular amoung skeet shooters.

I have a set of Briley tubes that I use to shoot .410, 20 and 28 gauge in my Beretta 682. I bought it used and it didn't come with the weight set but I had a friend who had one that attached to the barrels to ensure the balance and weight was all equal in each gauge. I do know my scores went up when I went to a single gun with a single sight picture, fit, trigger etc. I doubt I'll ever be serious enough at skeet for it to matter.
