It was a vintage savage 99 in .300 savage, I can see why old timers liked that set up.
Currently enjoying my Winchester xtr in .308 , a perfect deer caliber and rifle in my opinion.
Memento mori ( remember you must die) enjoy every day for tomorrow you may not wake

Everyone hunter should own a fine rifle, life is short.

My current favorite for NE whitetail hunting is my Marlin 30AS 356 Winchester Trapper rebore with a Leupold 1-4x scope. My shots are 200 yards and under.

CZ 550 American with a Trijicon Accupoint scope, green tritium dot centered in a mil-dot reticle and chambered in 6.5x55 Swede. I handload 130 grain Nosler Accubonds over 48 grains of Viht N560 in Lapua cases. Accurate and deadly and i will continue shooting it well into my golden years. I wouldn't mind working up a new load with the 142 grain Long Range Accubonds, they were not available when I started hunting with this rifle.

The summer I was 15 I bought a Model 81 BLR in 308. Someone had special ordered it from Browning with no sights. They put a deposit with the dealer, Rite Way Sports in Hardwick Vermont, and never came back to pick it up. I got a great deal. I think Larry had a soft spot for a kid spending his hard earned money. I literally spent all I had and could not buy ammo. He threw in a box for free. Will never forget how well he treated me.
Sorry for being so sappy. Brought a smile to my face ! We N E E D more business men like that. I'm afraid it's a thing of the past. Jerry

I had/have a couple favorites for my whitetail hunting which has been conducted 100% in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia. In the past it was a Winchester XTR Featherweight in 6.5x55. Currently it's a Ruger #1 in 6.5x55. (See a trend there?) Various .30's with heavy cast bullets have also figured prominently and this year either an original Model 1903 NRA Sporter and/or a .30-40 Krag sporter will get some "air time". (Now that eminent cataract surgery will restore my ability to see through iron sights again.)
An opportunity is presented to me this year to hunt some prime deer country in Ohio with an old pard. Being a "straight wall cartridge zone" I'm planning to use a Martini Cadet single shot in .357 Magnum.

Winchester 1894 32-40 Takedown... How can one possibly use a rig like that to kill a deer, especially there in the "high, wide, and lonesome". I would be led to believe a 6.5 Creedmoor at minimum or better yet a .30 Whizbang Magnum was needed for such work.

Pretty fun to discuss all the different stuff that works for us all. Shrapnel does have some neat danged stuff that takes great pictures!

When a rifle does this every time, it becomes a favourite here. I had the scope off and on (Talley QDs) so had to confirm POI thus the two shot groups. Top group 1st fired. Bottom group adjusted.

7mm RM, for some reason it's often the one I pick from the safe before I head out the door. Was not thrilled about the chambering when I built it have grown to like it very much. Win 70 CRF, Shilen barrel, Brown Precision stock, Zeiss Divari 3x12-56. Something about the combination of the parts makes this rifle very easy to shoot, very moderate felt recoil.

I had you marked for 257 R for some reason. Just a hunch.

I had you marked for 257 R for some reason. Just a hunch. When I joined the Campfire (introduced by MuleDeer in 2003) I was very interested in everything 257, including the 250-3000, 257R, 257 Improved, 25-06 and 257 Wby mag. I've owned Win 70 rifles in all of those chamberings, including three semi-custom in 257R. I did the same with the 6.5s, including 260, 6.5x55, 6.5-06, 6.5CM and 264 WM, all Win 70s as well. Well, times and interest have changed, have culled off much of my collection and there are no 25 or 6.5s in my safe presently. Figure no sense in changing my moniker, wouldn't make much of a difference but I was a 257 R fan when I joined the Campfire almost 20 years ago.

So have you moved up to the 7s and 30s or down to the 6s and 22s?
