No, it's not the surprise that Little Suzy Rottencrotch gave you after a double feature at the drive-in. Apparently Chicago sandwich shops put it on their Italian Beef sandwiches as a condiment. It's basically coarsely chopped pickled vegetables, packed in oil.

Never had a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich, but I gotta tell you, this shìt is freaking delicious on sandwiches. Just a plain turkey sandwich becomes really, really good with a heap of this stuck on it.

I suggest you try a jar. The regular is really good as well, but the spicy is mo betta. It comes in smaller jars than a quart as well.

I buy Mezzetta's hot version and have for years. My Mother would make it every year though hers had anchovies in it. Yuck on the latter...

Haven't seen olives mentioned yet

The jar in the OP is sans olives.
The real muffuletta condiment is called "olive salad ".
Contains both green and black chopped olives.
The real deal is good enough to eat with a spoon
like ice cream

Marconi brand has always been my favorite.

Great on just about anything but especially hot dogs and italian beef sandwiches. Combos too.

If you've ever hit a Portillos, they use Marconi.

Marconi's is da bomb. I can't find that stuff anywhere in the Atlanta area. Had to get my brother in Elgin, Il. to send me a couple of bottles. That and "sport peppers" are hard to find down here.

Jeff Bezos will sell it to you, which is where I got that latest quart. Not cheap though. Once upon a time my local Walmart carried the mild original version, got me hooked on it, then of course they stopped carrying it.

Bezos also sells it by the gallon, and if I had the refrigerator space, I'd be seriously tempted.
